Out on the tip of the Keewanah Peninsula (that chunk of land that sticks out into Lake Superior) it gets really dang cold, with the wind from the lake and all. Having your pee freeze on the way to the ground is a good indicator that it is below -40f. Dealing with the cold seems to be something that stays with a person. I've not lived in the UP for about 30 years, but still find about +40f to be the perfect temp. I put on long pants when the snow gets into my birkies. I think it is the layer of insulating blubber covered with hair that helps.
