I'm dying in this weather man. I hate the humidity. Luckily I'm in the lab at work, and it's air conditioned.

Hah! Minnesota doesn't usually start until after Halloween. Even now it's amazingly nice out. Lucky for us it doesn't actually get cold until the lakes freeze over (usually late December).

Sunny and 70F in NW VT right now.

It's a bit chilly here in New York City, but it's sunny and clear; beautiful weather for this time of year.

First taste of winter here with snow flurries falling overnight, but no accumulation expected. Possibly a hard frost before morning but back into the 60s by Monday.

Heh, snow, I remember the last two times it snowed in Australia where I live, last time was last year and we had some small snowfall which instantly melted as it hit the ground and everyone ran outside from the classrooms jumping around, then before that I was probably about 4 years old and mum wouldn't let me go outside :'(. I'll trade weather, you can have our 40 degree days and I'll have your snow.

Ironically, -40 is the same on both scales. :o

The conversion from C to F is
(9/5) * C + 32 = F
You do the math

If you look at any thermometer that is designed to work in those temps you'll see the -40 lines aligned.

And yeah, I've seen it go that cold (and colder). Alberta winters FT...something.

I honestly can't tell much difference between -20 F and -40 F. Its fracking cold anyway you look at it.

Maybe it was colder than -40, but I think that's about the temperature that the water in my eye sockets began to freeze, and made cool cracking sounds whenever I moved my eyes.

I sure as hell used to be able to. The difference is on one of those days my car would start, not so much on the other.

I keep hearing that Idaho is "God's country." Maybe so, but it's a cruel and spiteful god.

Well, -20 is about where the moisture in your nose starts freezing as you inhale and melting again as you exhale, giving that cool/annoying "crinkle" effect. I always noticed that was about the point my father (who worked outdoors most of his life) switched from calling it "chilly" to "cold."

Assuming no wind, it actually is kind of hard to discern any gradations beyond that point because you're generally trying not to have any part of your body in direct contact with the air, and what little is exposed is essentially numb. But lots of other non-living things give you clues. Batteries don't work. You've got to plug in the block heater or the car won't crank even with a fresh, warm battery. Tires get flat spots when a car sits for a time, and spontaneously lose their bead and all their air. Glass becomes extremely brittle, and ice is basically harder than most metals. And sometimes you can get your spit to do that cool "crack" thing where it freezes on contact.

I work outside all the time. I did a job in jackson wyoming a couple of years ago and it was -35 when i stepped out on the driveway it was cold but nothing carharts cant handle. My truck will start just fine when its -40. It doesn't really like it but I have never had a problem. I normally keep it plugged in when it starts getting down around 0 F just because I have heat when I start it up not when I am 15 miles down the road.

Here is a list of the extreme temperatures by state http://ggweather.com/climate/extremes_us.htm for anyone that might be curious.

I spent lots of winters in the UP growing up and into my 20's. Out on the tip of the Keewanah Peninsula (that chunk of land that sticks out into Lake Superior) it gets really dang cold, with the wind from the lake and all. Having your pee freeze on the way to the ground is a good indicator that it is below -40f. Dealing with the cold seems to be something that stays with a person. I've not lived in the UP for about 30 years, but still find about +40f to be the perfect temp. I put on long pants when the snow gets into my birkies. I think it is the layer of insulating blubber covered with hair that helps.

Figures Minnesota is the eastern most state that's really freaking cold.
Wow at California... mountains and death valley?
where is cold is Oregon? East of the mountains or something?

I'm glad MN at least has lakes. They keep us slightly warm far longer than you folks out west.

I told some people that have lived in Hawaii their whole lives that people in MN need a layer of fat to survive winter. I think a couple of them believed me. A lot of them actually asked me "does it snow there?" My wife and I had a good laugh at their expense... of course they'll have the last laugh come January.

It's below freezing here in Idaho at night. About 40 something in the daytime, plus wind chill. I've had to keep a fire going all the time. Electric heat is expensive, so I've just been burning wood and coal.

Here the low electric bill is offset by high heating bills. Where are you?

Really? I would have thought that gopher-worthy subterranean construction would be pretty good at temperature regulation.

My apartment unit is only half underground... and has excellent temperature regulation. In the past year or so, I haven't used the AC at all, and I only turned on the heat in January.
