Hey,

In a few weeks, I might be the lucky owner of a fully packed Inspiron 8200 with a GeForce4 440Go. I'm interested in anyone with first hand experience with these graphics chips, especially in laptops.

Are the 440Go's compareable to 440MX?

Are the 440Go's comparable to 440MX?

In a nutshell: I'd guess YES.

According to NVidia, the GeForce4 440 Go has 7GB/s of memory bandwidth, a core clock of 220MHz, and a theoretical maximum fill rate of 880 MTexels/sec (two pixel pipelines with two textures each per clock cycle).

The GeForce4MX 440 has 6.4GB/s of memory bandwidth, a core clock of 275 MHz, and a theoretical maximum fill rate of 1100 MTexels/sec (two pixel pipelines with two textures each per clock cycle).

Does the GeForce4 440 Go share system memory, or have its own?

To achieve its 7GB/s of memory bandwidth, I am certain that the GeForce4 440 Go has its own 225/450 MHz 128-bit DDR memory bus.

If you went with a 133/266MHz 64-bit PC2100 memory bus like the NForce IGP, you would need FOUR of them to provide as much as 7GB/sec bandwidth. Even NForce IGP-128 (previously called NForce 420D) has only 4.2GB/s of total memory bandwidth, and the CPU needs half of that.

The card has it's own memory (on the "configure your laptop page" I can choose between a 32mb and a 64mb DDR version.

Do any of you know if the card supports the features of the GeForce4 Titanium line? (ie. not some GeForce2-ish feature set, but the one with the pixel shaders, DX8 features, etc).

Not that it *really* matters, as I'll be doing just fine with ANY graphic card on a laptop that can do 1400x or 1600x, but I wouldn't mind a descent card that can pish some pixels in a game of MoH or Jedi Knight II.

I believe that you hit it on the head in your first post. The GeForce4 440 Go appears to be pretty close to a GeForce4MX 440. Thus, you get hardware acceleration of DirectX 7 T&L, and you get the DVD playback improvements of the GeForce4MX over the GeForce2MX, but you don't get the DirectX 8 programmable shaders from the GeForce3, Radeon 8500, or GeForce4Ti. Nevertheless, this thing should provide some excellent gaming performance for a laptop. NVidia needs to score well here because the Radeon 7 Mobility has been spanking the GeForce 2Go in game benchmarks, power consumption, and driver stability.
