Nvidia Falls Short

Wed Jul 02, 2008 7:19 pm

rttnews wrote:
Wednesday, graphics chipmaker Nvidia Corp. lowered its second quarter revenue outlook, citing end-market weakness, delayed ramp of a next generation MCP, and price adjustments of GPU products due to competitiveness. Nvidia also expects to incur a one-time charge in the second quarter related to expenses from a weak die/packaging material set used in certain versions of its previous generation products for notebook systems. Following the news, the company's shares fell by more than 19% in the after-hours trading.

For the second quarter, the company now expects revenue in the range of $875 million to $950 million. On average, twenty-five analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial expect revenue of $1.10 billion for the second quarter.

I heard they had to halt after-hours trading on their stock. $125million shortfall seems like a lot to me.

If things are this bad for Nvidia, what does that mean for AMD and others?

22% down afterhours, seems like capitulation/over reaction to me. I know i'm buying more shares in the morning.

Since NVIDIA is starting to hit some hard times, perhaps AMD/ATI can finally recapture part of the market.

I don't know much about NVIDIA's marketing strategy, but it seems like they could have avoided this by not trying to milk the 8800 series of graphics cards for almost two years and then wonder how ATI caught up.
