Noob running nVidia beta - 6.12 beta 6

Sun Jun 22, 2008 11:24 am

This is my first stab at FAH and just wanted to say a quick hello to everybody and hope to help contribute to 2630. I am running the client on a 9800 gtx atleast until my gtx 280 comes hopefully sometime this week. Good Luck all, and any advice on how I can make the most out of FAH please let me know. Thanks again.

Nice, thanks for the contribution. I need to get my lazy butt to install the client on my 9800GTX, what kind of PPD are you getting? What is your CPU?

IM running a Intel quad core Q9300 @ 2.5
and according to my Fahmon which I am also still getting used to it says that I am at 5292.00 ppd. I have no idea if that is good or what.

Are you running the CPU client as well or just the GPU. If you are running the CPU client as well is it the standard client (and how many instances) or SMP client?

Either way that is some nice PPD.

Im just running the one GPU client. I am not running any CPU client. If I run more than one client what exactly will that do with my overall ppd and stress on the GPU? Like I said I am still learning the ropes of FAH.

No worries, were here to help! It would be nice if we could get a sticky going detailing the GPU client a bit more, I am pretty much in the dark about it myself.

If the 9800GTX is doing 5292PPD by itself then that is phenomenal, what drivers are you running?

Unfortunately running another GPU client won't help in your situation. CPU clients on the other hand would. You can load up the SMP client found here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther. On some of my folding machines I run the SMP but on others I do not, this is because the SMP client isn't exactly all that polished, if you don't monitor it a few times a week you will find it has hung and the deadline for the WU is long passed (in my case I typically need to completely remove the software and then reinstall it every few weeks). You get a lot more PPD out of the SMP though.

If you are after a set it and forget it approach I would go with three instances of the standard client found here: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download (5.04 text-only console). I say three since one of your CPU cores is actually being used for the GPU client. You might be able to run four but I haven't heard anything about how well that works.

Thanks for the links to the CPU client. I will give it a try. The drivers that I am running are 177.39. Again, once the GTX 280 comes in the mail I will be updating everything again.

Exactly how do I have three clients running through my cpu and my gpu running at the same time, when I try to run the cpu client it says that one client is already running and that two cannot run at the same time. Thanks

You cannot run the same client from the same folder. To run multiple instances of the single core client, you have to install multiple copies of it in different folders, and you need to assign (use the -config or -configonly) option to give them different Machine IDs.

However, since you have a quad, I would suggest SMP+single core+GPU. These clients all install to different folders (can be a pain to set up FahMon/FahSpy on those). Of course, you can try various combos and report back on which one give you the best ppd. ;)

Curious question: interested in folding for the UnitedGerbilNation?

Being an absolute Noob about all of this I have no idea how to assign machine Id's at all. Do you have links for the SMP and single core clients. Atleast I have my GPU client running. Thanks again

I want to be able to run three cores and the gpu client but have no idea what to do. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Thanks

I would run this:

One instance of SMP
One instance of GPU. The GPU, will take up one full core.
I'd leave the last core free. The single core client really isn't putting out a whole lot of points anyway. And then if you wish to actually use your compuer, you will have a core free.

Now then, for actually installing the programs, I would start by installing the smp client first. Do you have linux or a VM? If not and you don' t want to, you'll need to fiddle with the win smp. Install it per instructions. These instructions are complex, but there is a great thread on it here :http://www.techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=47827

Then simply install the GPU client. Make sure to set the affinity for it as core 2 or 3 (0 and 1 will be your smp). Then install F@H and bask in the glory of your folding prowess.

p.s. you did get the right team number, right? Its a 6 and a 4 right next to each other.

So what's the final setup:
- GPU + SMP
- GPU + SMP + single core
- ?

Make sure the GPU2 client has a core to itself, and not competing with the SMP client.

You can try tweaking the 9800GTX using Nvidia Ntune to boost the clocks up. I've got a 8800GT that pushing almost 5000PPD.

Even jokingly fooling someone about another team's number seems rather low, if you ask me.

Here is a post from Pegasus who has both a quad-core running 2 SMP clients and a GPU client simultaneously, and how he got 2 SMP clients running with the GPU client in a way so as not to starve the GPU client of a CPU core.

Were I you, I'd ask in that thread how he was able to assign specific cores to specific clients, since I'm not sure how that's done in Linux. And I'd ask what his production is like, since as far as I know there's no other information about doing that, and he's doing it as an experiment, the results of which will determine its usefulness. His production seems to have dropped precipitously in the last few days.
