Parents need a new TV

Sun Jul 20, 2008 7:43 pm

So my parents need a new tv in light of the digital switch. They don't really want a coverter as I've conviced them to get a new tv. (yes I still live with my parents, just 16). So they are looking at a small one so nothing bigger than 30". I would like it to be at 1080P or 1080i as I think 720 is fazing out. Also the cost is hoping to be around $750. Can this be done? I really have no idea were to look. Thanks for your help.

I haven't heard anything about 720 being phased out.

How close will you be sitting to the TV?

It's not going to be easy to stay under $750 and still get 1080p.

I guess I was wrong about 720P. Is it for smaller tvs because I have found no small tv with 1080. So I guess 720P is fine. Screen size stil needs to be less than 30" though.

Unless you are sitting very close, you won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a smaller TV. 1080p is kind of a waste of money except on really big TVs like 50" and up, unless you use it as a computer monitor.

This one looks good. I would consider getting a 32" or even a 37", though. The higher resolution of HDTVs means you can get a bigger set, sit the same distance away, and still see the picture clearly.

Well we got one. They really didn't want a large one and anthing over 30" would be hard to fit on the stand. This is what we got: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/sto ... 1665376305

Check these out:

Decent price, pretty good size. Also I think it's pretty rare to find 1080P under 30 inches for a TV, unless you're thinking about using a computer monitor instead. If you are, then use at least a 24 inch monitor that has TV input and such. You may need separate speakers however.

Thats alright. It's ok picture. Movies are 480P and TV is 1080i or 720P, you can really see the detail sometimes. Lots of inputs, which I liked.

I am. I use it more than my parents. Tv looks good but DVDs are not as amazing. I'm using a Philips 5 disc changer DVD player with component out, so 480P(progressive scan). My question is, do the upconverting DVD player do anything. Or would it be better if I convinced them we need a ps3 to watch movies(Bluray).

Convince them they need a PS3. The difference, provided that all the equipment is set up properly, is amazing. The pitch I used to sell my girlfriend on getting a PS3 is to show her the cost difference between a BluRay player and a PS3. $50 more will get us a console capable of playing all the Rock Band/Guitar Hero games with awesome graphics. She was sold. Now we're saving to get a PS3 and an HDTV.

Even an upscaling DVD player looks loads better than 480p. I hadn't expected it to matter as much as it did, but it knocked my socks off. So if your tv has HDMI inputs, get a decent upscaling dvd player and hook it up, it'll help.

The PlayStation 3 is the best option. It's not just the most-capable Blu-ray player, it's also an upscaling DVD player. Oh, it also plays games, too.

Mom wants a Wii, thinks they're more family oriented than what the PS3 has to offer. Sure t has some good games. I'm ok on GH series. But I like good graphics, and I'm not sure how the wii will live up to my standards.

This man speaks the truth. It'll make regular DVD's look better as well as allow you to play BluRay movies. It's also a great way to stream movies from your PC over the network to you TV. Then there's the whole next-gen gaming thing too

Depending on the ratio of HD to standard definition that they are going to be viewing, be sure that you have a screen that does upconversion reasonably well. There is nothing worse than watching 480i on some of the small, cheap LCD's.

I recomment the Sony Bravia line (not sure how small the Bravias go and there is a difference between the true Bravias and less Sonys). Smaller than 30", you'd be looking at a 26M4000.

Lol, we got a Sony Bravia 26". You're absolutely right about 480i though. Movies aren't to bad, 480P, but reg. tv is horrible to me. Looks all blocky. I've really begun to like 720P and 1080i.
