Apple iPhone 2.0

Fri Jun 20, 2008 1:30 pm

I didn't find anything in the search on this but has anyone read about the new iPhone coming out July 11th? I heard of something about the new iPhone being able to connect to exchange servers. I wouldn't mind getting rid of the BlackBerry from work and picking up a new iPhone if this is the case. So just wondering if anyone has any more specific info on that feature?

Thanks!

To the fellow gerbils living in the good old US of A, next time when you want to complain about AT&T and your iPhone plans, just look at what we are getting up North.

I wanna know about what's up with the Iphone Lotus Notes client that IBM had announced they were working on.
I'm wondering if that's been shuttered as part of some agreement Apple made with MS to open up exchange compatibility or something.
Anyone heard anything about it?

I don't know that Apple had to make any "agreement" with MS. Exchange Server is a pretty open platform. All Apple should have needed was an MSDN subscription and a half knowledgable Windows developer.

I think they had to get an licence to use the Activesync protocol.

Open platform?

"Pretty open" platform. Would "relatively open" work better for you?

It supports all the major internet protocols: SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, LDAP, HTTP. The proprietary protocol, MAPI, is extremely thoroughly documented -- sample code and docs are only an MSDN subscription away.

SO yeah....took the plunge I got the 16gb one. However I was sent home because the activation servers are down. The weird thing is AT&T just said connect it later and activate VIA iTunes. So I have an inop 2.0 device for now.....I will wait and try again later.

You know whats funny, the iPhone 1.0 is selling like hotcakes on ebay. Some guy asked what I was going to do with my old one I said probably give it to the wife, he said "I was going to offer you 200 bucks for it." :o Now it seems that if you did not put the 2.0 software on it people want to buy it!

You can buy cheaper plans for it and/or use it unlocked without too much trouble now that the 3G version is out. I'm sure anybody who buys it will be putting the 2.0 software on, though.

Am I the only one irritated to see the price of 3G iPhones on eBay not less that $600? *sigh* The regular old iPhone for me then.

IMO, WM phones are much better than Iphone's offering, but than that's just me... I consider iphone (1st generation only) a crap.

IMHO I consider WM devices crap. Constant bugs, hangs, reboots, et al. Simplicity is really the best and the iPhone delivers. Yes its missing a couple of features that I would like but it does the number one thing I need it to do........COMMUNICATE, whether thats by voice or email. Having used a Blackberry, WM device, and the iPhone for work I can say that the iPhone wins, but only by a slim margin over the Blackberry. The only way a BB would win would be if you have a BES environment. However those are pricey.

If you asked what I would suggest for corporate use I probably would say iPhone.

One of my coworkers bought the 3g iphone to upgrad his old one. The interface is really slow. I was surprised. There's a distinct lag when executing almost any application or action. Definitely not a positive feature in my book.

He needs to reset it. And if he hasnt upgraded to the new release he needs to do that. If its doing it and he has jailbroken it.....well thats his fault.

I'll mention that when he gets in. Thanks. (And no, I'm sure he hasn't jailbroken it)

This was fixed in the 2.0.1 firmware update. I agree that the 2.0 firmware that it shipped with buggy and slow as hell. 2.0.1 however is MUCH better.

Anandtech has noted that the interface feels sluggish to him, but attributes it to there being less idle time (through a lousy interface) for the phone to hide tasks behind like there is in Windows Mobile. *shrug*

Might have mostly been fixed in the 2.0.1 update, but my first gen iPhone running the latest firmware still feels a little sluggish.

Seriously, those of you complaining of "sluggishness" need to do a wipe of the device and restart. My 2.0 is fast as ever.

Oh, you're probably right... I'm just too lazy and impatient to do it today, maybe tonight. I'll see if it helps.
