I'll take a look at it when I have access to that PC, although I do remember trying that without success. If it works, I'm assuming you'd want it for UGN.. :D

Why yes, that would be very nice. And we'd hope that you'd even stick around :)

Hey guys,

I quit folding for the summer (my AC couldn't quite keep up with it), but now that it's getting cooler, I'm going to start getting back into the game. I have a few machines to add:

P4 w/ 2600Pro GPU2
Celeron 2.66 w/ Linux Client
X2 5400 @3.0 w/ 8800 GTS (GPU2 client, I guess)

The first two are working fine, and I'll have them up soon. However, the third one (at a different house) is having some problems. Every time I start up the client, it gives the error "Error code 0 - Could not download core". This happens no matter the client I use. I have no firewall software, and the Windows firewall is disabled. As far as I know, there is nothing that should be blocking it on my router, either. Doesn't the client just use port 80 as a HTTP browser would? There's nothing helpful on the Stanford forum.

Does the error occur on a Vista PC? I got similar errors when first installing the SMP client because I needed to use "Administrator" priviledges to install the client. Is it the SMP client? Did you get the "MPI is working, MPI is working" message after install? :o

hah I just posted too. Up already from the noon hour.

AF seems to have had a bump in the last few days on their Summary page. Although Team MacOS X looks like they are pretty steady for the past few weeks.

I thought I'd finally join in. I'm not dedicate 24/7 yet, as I need the temperature to drop so I can stand being in my office during the day. I've added a GPU client (8800GT), and I've got my old IBM T30 laptop running (not quickly, but quicker than not running), as well.

I stopped folding probably about 8 months ago when my main rig's motherboard died a horrible death. I just brought a P4 3GHz Prescott online today and will be bringing my new Phenom 9850BE online tomorrow. There's a good chance I'll be able to get another P4 online as well in the next day or so. Unfortunately I don't have any folding-capable GPUs yet. :(

We should probably check back tomorrow to see the numbers. EOC is still using Aug 19th's numbers (big spike for all teams) to figure current average PPD. But the 18th (the big dip when stanford was offline) was dropped off yesterday and isn't included in that PPD figure now. So the avg PPD being calculated might be skewed based on the 18th's numbers alone.

Well I added a 2.8GHz P4 today. My Phenom didn't arrive yesterday like I had planned, but it should be online tonight assuming that UPS doesn't screw up.

Very nice. If you're not familiar with the SMP client, and want to contribute the max points, let us know and we can help you set that up. We'll do that in another thread though, should try to keep this one on the recruitment topic.

I can run two at once and get no slowdown right now (PPD doesn't change when I close one of my clients), because unless it's one of the new "big" workunits, I'm only using about 320 of the 800 stream processors. That's part of the reason why nVidia is beating AMD/ATI on F@H right now - fewer shaders, clocked higher.
I ran another GPU2 client on my 4850 to see if it would use the unused processors. (The core speed is OCed) PPD was split between the two. From 1800PPD on 1 client to 900 and 900 PPD on 2 clients. I'm not seeing how I could use the extra processors on 1 core by running multiple clients.

I went down to running one instance, and my PPD didn't go up at all (or very slightly went up, like less than 100 PPD). Are you sure you're not running one of those new big workunits? Both of mine were the smaller ones.

I'm disappointed with the speed of the dual core G5. And the clockspeed is supposed to be high at around 2.7GHz yet it's hardly chewing through the work units. And the worse part is that there are no SMP clients for it so no max points WU for it.

I'm running my 8800GTS with an X2 CPU, but I noticed the GPU2 client is only using one of the CPU cores. Would it make much of a difference to run another FAH client on the other core, or should I just leave it?

A single core can add at least a couple of hundred points or more a day. Here's what I get (highlighted) from a Barton XP-2600 overclocked a little above 2.2 GHz (stock is 1.916 GHz):

Hi guys need a little help here. I basically have 2 machines which i can use to run some sort of folding clients. My desktop with 8800 GTS 512 MB and xeon e3110 is running GPU2 client. Processor usage is really low right now like 5-10%. Can i run another smp client which will make use of my processor and get more points.
My other machine is a Dell inspiron laptop with C2D processor. Which client will be the best to use on my laptop. If it helps it has ati x1400 onboard chip and currently i have windows XP and ubuntu installed. Can someone help me out here or atleast point me to another thread where i can find this information.

thanks in advance.

You can run a SMP client on the Xeon E3110 if your GPU2 client is just taking up 10%. That Xeon is a dual core right? Just make sure to set the CPU client to IDLE and the GPU2 client to slightly higher priority (right-click->configure->advanced if you are using the GPU2 system tray).

On the laptop if you really want to run something then run the CPU client. You COULD run a SMP client but it might not make the deadlines since you may only want it running when plugged into the wall and not on the battery. Maybe just run 1 or 2 single core clients. If you don't like it running hot then run just 1 single core client. I don't think the 1400 is supported and even if it was it wouldn't be better than your CPU. My 8500GT just does 500 PPD.

For your desktop I am guessing you are running Vista based on your low CPU utilization from the GPU2 client. You should definitely be able to add an SMP client to further augment your points. If you want to go to some extra effort you could run an SMP client in a virtual unix environment, which would further speed things up since the SMP client runs a little faster in unix. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=47827

For your laptop, you may just want to run a regular client on that. Laptops can get pretty hot. If you don't mind the heat thought give the SMP client a try on it as well.

New numbers in.
http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=2630

Tr Average: 630,239
Today's Points: 694,317

MacOS X Average: 657,437
Today's Points: 689,441

Even in just a day, we've closed the gap by 7.5k points. Were only 27k away! We also out produced them today.

Is it possible we will be back on their threat list in a few days?

Unfortunately though, the only other team we have any chance in catching up to, Alliance Francophone, is also boosting their ppd.

We have 327 active folders at the moment. I don't remember what the number was before the Call to Arms, but I kinda think it was about that same number. If that's the case, our massive surge in points is mainly through all the normal folders getting a little more dedicated and active. Just think what we could do if we could get some of the other 2200 folders back on the active list :o

There's gotta be something we can do to spark a re-interest in folding. How about free cake?
