Does GPU memory matter?

Thu Sep 04, 2008 12:33 pm

I'm looking at putting a 8600GT in my HTPC and was just wondering if 256 vs. 512MB of memory made a difference in folding performance?

You want to fold with that... thing?

Edit: no, makes no difference.

It's better than not folding with it. ;)

Very true. I even have the Celerons and Semprons at work running. However between the 6 computers we don't even have 150 WU done since I started.

Are you considering buying the 8600 GT, is it being given to you, or do you already have it?

If you're considering purchasing it new, might I suggest something along the lines of this 9500GT instead?

You know you could grab one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150276

It should do much better at folding.
i5 2500K @ 4.6GHz / Cooler Master V8 / Asus P8P67 Evo / 8GB G.skill DDR3-1600 / Zotac GTX 780 3GB / Seasonic S12-650 / Samsung 850pro 256GB SSD / Corsair 600T Graphite / those cheap 1440p Korean monitors

Thanks for the tip! At $85 + free shipping, I've pulled the trigger. My only concern is whether or not it'll fit in the case. But that's what saws and dremels are for, right? Hopefully it'll be up & going mid-to-late next week.

The good news: I've got the 8800GS and it looks like it'll fit in my case.
The bad news: My PSU doesn't have a 6pin PCIE connector. Time to get a new PSU, I guess.

The card didn't come with a 4-pin->6-pin adapter? That's lame. I've got one somewhere I could mail to you if you wanted.

Nope, time to hunt for the 6 pin connector that's it ;)

EDIT: I just went to that newegg link again and the 8800GS box has an extra 6 pin connector as a bundle.

That's what I get for not looking in the box. Seriously, who does? I pulled the card out & was ready to go to work!

On a side question, is 300W enough for the 8800GS, 1 SATA HDD & a IDE DVD drive?

Depending on the Rails, I would think so:

It's up & going. I'll be curious if the 8800GS annoys my wife, as I was running a fanless 7600GT before. It is quite a bit louder. I may end up reverting back to the 7600GT.
