Need a new gaming monitor

Fri Sep 05, 2008 11:58 pm

Hello all,

I'm looking at this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824009125

Going to pair it up with a 4870x2

Any thoughts or counter recommendations?

Thank you!

Thats the panel type, TN panels have relatively low viewing angles but that shouldn't be much of a probably for you since you will be using it for gaming and you will be sitting directly in front of it maybe 3 feet away the most.
Heres something you can read if you want to learn about LCD panel types. http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/lcd-panel-types.php

Acer AL2216Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor with HDCP support - Retail
Item #: N82E16824009094

How about that one?

Or, any suggestions in a decent price range? 22" or so, 1600x is fine Res.

Thanks! :)

I wouldn't say "horrible color" but they not as good as the other panels.
TN panels are all you need for gaming and regular stuff, in fact almost all gaming intented monitors are TN panels because of high response time.

As for the OP, what do you mean by decent price range?
Whats your budget for this monitor?
That Acer is good enough for gaming but not great. But ofcourse you won't get something great unless you shell out teh big bucks.

It's dithered 6 bit color emulating 8 bit color. The difference between a TN and CRT or TN and S-IPS/PVA panel is quite noticeable.

You can find S-IPS and PVA panels with RTC that really helps with response times.

I dunno, I just really dislike TN panels.

I just got the Benq G2400WD which I believe is also a TN monitor and I couldn't be happier.

TN panels are generally the cheapest and fastest LCD's out there and unless you do a lot of graphic design/photo editing a TN panel will be fine. If you're gaming keep in mind that a lot of the other "better" panel types can suffer from input lag.

I got a good deal on the Benq - it was about $260 from newegg last month. Keep your eye on http://slickdeals.net/.

I would not say it has to be graphic design/photo editing. On a 20"+ monitor even staring straight on you may run into viewing angle issues too. I would hypothesize: "if you have a TN panel, just make sure you don't see a CRT/IPS/VA screen side-by-side". :D
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

It depends on your uses. Like I've said before, the 6-bit panel that I use at work is just fine for what I do. The viewing angle is decent enough, my only complaint is that it's analog and so the text isn't as sharp. *shrug*

Latest TN panels are not as bad as you make it sound. My wife's PC is equipped with 22 inch Viewsonic LCD & if i compare it with my Dell 24 Inch LCD, i can hardly notice the color difference, no doubt the view angle of Viewsonic LCD is not as great as my 24" LCD, but it's fine when system is used more for gaming & less for other media purpose.
