iPod Touch - used 1G Vs new 2G

Sat Sep 13, 2008 2:58 pm

Hi there,

I need to look at stuff on the internet often for university, and the laptop is a bit too heavy. I was thinking of getting an iPod touch. I now have two options:

Option #1: I can get a used 32Gig iPod touch 1G on Craigslist for $300 with some accesories like a case and screen protectors.

OR

Option #2: I can also get a brand new 32Gig iPod touch 2G for $440 + Tax (in canada) == $492.

I want to know if the features on the new touch are worth the extra $192. Also tell me if you know of any secret option #3.

Thanks guys.

-Sid.

How will an iPod Touch let you look at things on the Internet?

By having built-in wifi and a web browser, maybe?

For option 3, have you considered Eee and its lookalikes?

My university professors post information using a web blackboard. I have to reference it atleast 5 times inbetween classes. I dont want to lug arround a whole laptop for that.

mattsteg: My current plan is to sell off my creative zen and get the touch as a replacement for that.

If I get the Eee PC or the Acer One, I will need a seperate Mp3 for my commute, which around an hour 1-way. I am also needing a pocket organizer, and the touch seems to the perfect device for it

With the older iPod you will have to upgrade to the 2.1 firmware to be able to download apps and use them. You can add ten bucks to the cost so you can do that. With the new firmware the features are exactly the same as far as I know. The new version is shaped slightly different and has a volume button on the side which you might want or might not care about. The two versions are very similar and for that big of price difference I would probably go with the older version.

Option 3 might be a clearance sale on older iPods at a local retailer.

The range on the built in wifi on the ipods is pretty darn good just FYI

The new touch includes hardware volume controls, the ability to use Apple's headphones with a built-in mic and control the touch with them (which is currently the only way to get sound into an iPod Touch), the internal hardware to connect to Nike+, and an internal speaker.
I decided hardware volume controls and the microphone headphones was enough for me to buy the 2nd-gen 16GB Touch, but I was just looking at new rather than used (price difference was ~$40).
