Radeon HD 4780, an absolute ton of folding problems

Wed Oct 22, 2008 8:58 pm

Hello, I'm getting rather annoyed and this is why:

I'm running vista 64-bit, and my gpu2 folding client encounters an error constantly.

Over the past 2 weeks almost every other day I've had to tinker with the client to get it working, and at the moment it decides it'll work for one unit, then crash midway through the next. I'm wondering, is there a problem with the gpu2 client on ATI cards, or am i just having terrible luck?

EDIT: and yes, I've tried every fix. Some worked for a time then stopped working, some actually broke the client, but most did nothing.

it was definitely tailored toward nvidia, but it works with ATI too.

Could be that version of the graphics driver or the hardware is creating errors from an OC or parts of the GPU overheating. I'm not really sure tbh.

There are GPU2 clients for both ATI and Nvidia. In fact, the ATI version was out before the Nvidia (april 10th vs june 17th).

What about an older driver that is also known to work with folding@home? I'm not up to date on how the different ATI drivers are performing with the client but in general newest isn't always best.

if i swap to an older driver my fan speed will go back down and my card will hit 85C full load. Besides, I was getting the same problems with CAT 8.9

I also have a 4870 with 64 bit vista, I'm using 8.8 drivers.

The GPU client works fine on it and I have yet to see a stall or a problem with not getting work units.

However, I do get Unstable Machine errors where it stops a unit and starts a new one.

From what I've read, this is a error on Stanford's part and the new long chain work units (The ones that get 4k ppd instead of 2k ppd) get this problem. They have said they are working on fixing it, but its been happening for well over a month.

The only thing I have noticed is that when the computer is not being used it is much more stable. For instance if I leave it on for a day and don't touch it, it will have no errors. But if I am using the computer and gaming on and off it will have errors. It is probably a snake oil cure but I have noticed a slight reduction of errors when I removed Rivatuner and made sure CCC was not active.

I take it however that you are having much more serious problems since the Unstable machine errors or early termination errors just cause a new work unit to download, no stalling or corruption.

Maybe you need to delete the FAhcore and have it re-download in case the core exe got corrupted?

as far as i know the 6.20r1 GPU2 client has both CUDA and CAL libraries and the 4870 should have no problem with using the GPU2 client

the only cards that i know for sure that have a problem with the GPU2 client is my very own card, the HD4670

I have been having the same problem with my 4850. Stanford just released a new core 1.18 and many people are having the same problem. What has worked for some is putting the GPU client in Windows XP compatibility mode. This is done by right clicking the .exe of the GPU client and under properties you can change this to XP. Also if your GPU is overclocked it may also not work. So try using stock clocks.
To Start Press Any Key'. Where's the ANY key?

You know, boys, a nuclear reactor is a lot like a woman. You just have to read the manual and press the right buttons.

tried, that actually broke mine. My client seems to be fairly stable atm (touch wood) only EUE'ing one in every 2 or 3, and fairly early too.

Would now be a bad time to comment that I'm getting 8,000 PPD or better on my GTX 280?

try using the 6.20r1 client instead of the specific ATI client...it works better for now IMO IIRC :)

I'm using 4850 with Catalyst 8.10.
Sometime the GPU client stopped without reason
but overall I can say it's ok for me.

Evan, don't give up on folding.
You are my nearest threats (if I don't stop or pause folding).
But if the problem bugs you a lot
then it's ok to take some break.
