In the market for a flat screen TV

Mon Nov 10, 2008 9:58 pm

I'm looking to get a new wall-mountable flat screen TV within the next month. I have a regular DVD player but no cable TV, so for the moment I'm not incredibly concerned with the highest resolution possible. What I was is a TV that's around 40" (give or take) that has a nice picture and is reliable. My price range (don't laugh now...) is $600-$800, though I can stretch it slightly if there's something much better for a little more.

I clearly notice the difference between lesser TN panels and my beautiful Dell 2407-HC, so whatever the equivalent in the flat screen TV arena is, I'd want the better option, if it isn't too expensive. Reliability is important, too. I've had my current 19" Sony Trinitron TV for about 20 years now, and it's still operating perfectly (it survived one major repair about 15 years ago). I'd like to make a similar investment, if that's possible in this price range.

I know a lot of people around here like Westinghouse, but I'm also wow'ed by Toshiba and Samsung when I see them in stores. Any advice on which TV to get, as well as the best place to get it, is greatly appreciated.

37" instead of 40, but Samsungs are nice, and it's pretty in line with the budget.

Bit cheaper, same size and Sony's also nice.

Not as sure about Toshiba, the ones in stores have always looked nice though

cheap but decentt 40"

similar.

All those should be decent and they're within spitting distance of your budget. I tried to avoid close outs and the like because they're too unpredicitable unless you're buying right now (but it's how I scored my uber deal on my TV).

EDIT: I doubt that 720 vs 1080 is a big deal on a 40" so I didn't specify between the two on my search. I don't think you'll likely find a good 40ish inch tv for 600 unless you get insanely lucky. One option is to visit local brick and mortars for return sales or clearances; it's how I got my 50" samsung for something 1,000 less than retail (1500 instead of 2600). The downside is you never know in advance what they'll have.

EDIT2: I know, best buy ugh, but shipping high end, heavy hardware scares the crap out of me.

Do you have a Costco membership? I don't know about recently, but I know they've had some good deals in the past.

They've got a couple of panasonic plasmas around his price range (I think Vrock has been complementary of their plasmas in the past) and several different LCDs from various makers. There's a 42 in panasonic plasma for 699.

Last week i saw a Samsung 46" 1080p listed on Amazon for 799 shipped. The model was LN46A500. It's sold through Electronics Expo which has 30000+ feedback. Looked like a good deal to me. It's a only got 2 HDMI if that matters to you though.

Edit: looks like it's been delisted. Sorry.

I know this isn't being quite as productive as you want but I'm pretty sure that panel TVs and monitors are supposed to have a significant drop in prices in the next 2 months.
