Antec 900 or Antec P182

Fri Dec 05, 2008 6:21 pm

I'm going to start building a system in the very near future, and I have yet to decide on a case. The two enclusures that have so far drawn my attention are the Antec 900 and the Antec P182.

I like the Antec 900 for it's cooling properties (huge fans) and side panel window. It's also quite a bit cheaper. However, I hear that the case gathers dust like no other and will have to be cleaned frequently. Is there any way to get around this?

The P182 is really sleek and quiet, but it's got no side panel window and the PSU is a pain to install from what I hear (I'm looking to buy the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750). Is there any way to buy a side panel with a window for this case or would I have to modify it myself?

Suggestions and comments are welcome. Thanks.

They are both excellent cases, but aimed at different markets. If you want a more flashy case, get the 900. If you want a more subtle case, get the 182. They will both cool any modern system adequately.

IMO, cutting a hole into a P182's side panel kinda defeats the purpose. The 900 doesn't gather that much dust though as long as you keep it off the floor. My 900 only has a little dust in it after about 5 months of usage. If you're still concerned though, you could shoehorn a filter into the modular bays. Another suggestion might to be just stretch panty hose over the front of your fans.

Also, I just noticed that Microcenter has the both cases for 79 bucks right now.

I have a P182 and $79.99 for one is a frigging steal. I think it's amazing. Although if you;re looking for something light and semi-portable then the P182 is not for you. It's quiet, very sturdy and elegant. I think the P182 has way more class than the 900, but that is my opinion.

No kidding. $79.99 really is a steal. Where did you find it?

Have you considered the gigabyte 3d mars? it's classier than the antec 900 and all aluminum, and it has two choices of side panels included..

great case for the $... but a little pricier than $80 as others have found here.

I'm using a P180 with a PCP&C Silencer 750W CF and had no problems with cable management or reach, even with a MASSIVE Heatsink for my CPU (Core Contact Freezer). Works well and looks amazing. Just watch out, I made the mistake of trying to adjust the seating of the case by the little "spoiler" vent on top and snapped it right off >.<.

If i had to do it all over I'd get the white P180 Mini, but im a sucker for sleek, white minimalist cases. :P

Antec would have been so much more better if it had some cable management holes.
Than again I would have loved it even more so if it was designed more simpleer like Antec 300. Which is the case I am looking to buy for my soon(hope) to build system.

Holes of which the P182 is possessed in abundance.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I love my Antec 900, but it took a little work to get it that way

I've drilled my own cable management holes, which was easy enough to do. I also painted all the grey crap black so it looks hella fly. Again, easy enough if you're willing to devote the time.

My only complaint is I wish I could have both front fans in and 4 5.25 drives rather than only 3... oh well... I'll figure somethin out.

So anyway... the Antec 900 is a modder's dream and a great case, but if you're looking for tidy and completely dust free with no moddification, then stay away. (but in imho, modding is fun!!)

Yes, my last build was with an Antec 900, and it was constantly collecting dust. Now I've got a P182 and love it; and so far it seems cleaner.

Did you paint the inside of your 900? I just got one and it looks nice but I like yours even better :P I'm really amazed at how much people make such a big deal about how quiet the P182 is, the 900 is near silent when you want it to be.

yea, I busted out the ol' matte black spray paint and let 'er have it!!! Then I drilled in some cable holes for good measure.

I agree, the 900 is quite silent (too bad my psu is lounder than a screaming banshee - BFG 650 watt - good power but the 2 80mm fans are fast and loud, even on not turbo mode)

Sure, but with the fans at the same speed and the same components, the P182 will be quieter every time. The Antec 900 reminds me of all those flashy cheap Raidmax cases, just nicer quality, but it also resembles a screen door inside. If you have actually silent components, then sure, the case will be quiet, but if something makes noise inside an Antec 900 you will hear it. The P182 goes out of it's way to dampen such things, and I absolutely love the way it's laid out inside.
