I suck at ftp

Mon Jan 05, 2009 9:39 pm

I fail.

I cannot "ls" or "dir" the remote directory. I get this bs error that the file does not exist. I try again and type the full path, same error. WTF? Frustration anyone?

This is ftp on FreeBSD and I am just trying to find the KDE4 package.

I am connecting to ftp2.us.freebsd.org and I manage to get as far as /pub/FreeBSD/ports/x11 and the "ls" and "dir" stop working. They worked for a bit and then just started erroring out.

OK, seriously, I have failed so many ways trying to get KDE installed on FreeBSD you would think I would have accidentally succeeded by now!

Well, it appears that the /pub/FreeBSD/ports/x11 directory does not in fact exist. I'm not sure why it doesn't give you an error when you initially try to "cd" into it.

If you're searching for a particular file, perhaps it would be easier to use the ftp client built into your web browser, e.g. go to ftp://ftp2.us.freebsd.org/ and navigate from there.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

elinks and lynx make pretty good text-mode web browsers and FTP clients, in case you haven't got your GUI up yet.

I like lftp for dedicated ftp, fwiw.

JBI, I tried "FireFTP" in Firefox and keep getting errors of all sorts. I'll try another ftp client.

I would like to just use command line ftp but I am just too much the noob.

It looks and sounds like the remote system is just having problems for whatever reason.

Anyway, did you make sure that your Router does not block the default FTP ports on inbound and outbound?

No, I didn't check the router. I was under the assumption that NAT would handle all that - there are no restrictions on outbound traffic so I had assumed it would allow responding inbound traffic. Maybe not?

Also, I am having this problem both at home ( a simple WRT54G-L / Tomato ) and at work ( an RV802 ).

I know for a fact that at work we can successfully connect to our own remote ftp site, although I have not tried from my own machine. I'll give that a look....

I'll also try one of the other FreeBSD mirrors.

The problem seems to be at your end; I can get into that FTP server OK.

Alright. Like I said, I suck

Hey, bthylafh, could you drop down a couple levels and "ls" or "dir" and make sure that my problem with doing so is also just me sucking?

You're router probably cannot handle passive ftp (its a bit of a pain to setup). Just use active ftp for now. Depending on how everything is set, sending the command PASV should toggle the active/passive setting.

I think you might be right - setting it as active did better, but still timed out.

Do you have FreeBSD's firewall turned on? Perhaps it's misconfigured somehow.

It's usually the other way around, active is the one that doesn't work through NAT routers unless they actively understand FTP as it has the server connect back to the client.

No. I have tried ftp on FreeBSD and I have tried two ftp clients on Windows and have utterly failed.

I am back at home now and am going to try an ftp client on Windows here at home.

OK, got it working at home using FileZilla. I had to forward some ports and have to use active mode.

That's really odd. Behind a NAT router I usually need to mess with ports only if I am actually running an FTP server. :o

A bit odd, but not too unusual. Some routers don't have great NAT support and can't figure out the IP that is sent to the passive ftp server needs to be rewritten to the routers IP. I've seen pretty poor NAT support in some older netgear and dlink routers. I suspect that upgrading the firmware may make a difference, but I am loathe to suggest that with older routers, as some of those firmware updates only make the situation worse for other things.

My older SMC barricade and my new linksys wrt54g2 both seem to handle everything with aplomb, but they cost more than dlink and netgear h/w. :/

Well, it is a WRT54GL with a fairly recent version of Tomato on it :shurg:

In Tomato under Advanced there should be a Conntrack / Netfilter menu that lets you enable and disable Tracking / NAT Helpers (according to the Tomato docs http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Tomato_Firmware#Advanced ). Double check that the FTP NAT helper is enabled.
