Saw this while over on /. and have to agree that this is the ugliest case I've ever seen. Although it is a neat idea.

Very inventive. It will be a major pain in the ass if something breaks though.

But your right it looks like a giant lump of phlem. BLAH!!!

Man talk about some serious cooling issues. Yeah, they had and air intake hole and such, but surrounding something that puts off lots of heat with a really think layer of insullation just isn't good.

That has got to be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen. I always wondered what makes people do stupid things like this and then put it on the net for the whole world to see!

It's different. That doesn't mean it's good.

Now I don't know about that. If you read through the article, the guy agrees that you should never do it on any "modern" system, but he did it on a pretty old system. I don't think it's stupid at all -- it does exactly what he wanted it to do; makes a very light LAN box for older games such as Quake or downloading files. No case cost, customized case, and low weight. It runs fine with such an old, low-heat system.

Why is it so stupid?

The only thing I would be worried about is cooling. Lets say your cpu starts to overheat, and the insulation starts to smoulder. Then your "neat looking case" becomes a smouldering ball of snot. Not a pretty sight, or smell for that matter. My only question is...Does this rig come with a fire extinguisher?

Polare, It just seems to me that you could do the same thing with a cardboard box. You could get a box the just right size and put everything in that. It would probably take a whie to figure out how to get all the parts not to move when you transport it. But once you had it set up you could do the exsact same thing with it except that it would be upgradeable/repairable and it would have much more room to cool.

I don't know maybe its just that I don't have too many hardware pieces to play with.

10/10 for innovation.
0.5/10 for practicality.

I'd say it's probably a really low-noise machine, with not much weight, hence the 0.5 :-)

I like it. I wouldn't put anything new in there, or make it my only computer, but now I know what I'm gonna do with my Pentium 200 MMX, which I have no case for! Put a Hotswappable HDD with some good fans and its cool.

I know a pentium 200 will be fine in there, but for the sake of cooling, I'm gonna have dual 9" fans, one in the back on the opposite side of the PSU, and one in the front.

I think that if you make a path for the air to go through, like in the front over the cards then another fan up near the drives to continue the path past the CD, and HDD swap, and then out the back with another fan, this could be "cool"

Maybe he was inhaling the fumes from the foam cans first and then came up with the idea.

It looks like something Jabba would hack up first thing in the morning.
It has got to be the most disgusting looking thing I have ever seen.

Which sig? I change it often. Mostly on a whim.
Currently I'm enjoying the Fight Club "I am Jack's _____" strain of sigs.
I just modify them to whatever I find amusing at the time.

It's the ever-changing case! If you think it is getting too hot inside of it, just drill some holes. If you need to gain access, get a saw, cut off a chunk, do your upgrade, then get another can and re-spray that part. Since there is no way of making this thing look the same everytime, you will always end up with a different shape.

My question is... why not make a hole for your favorite hot or cold beverage? Get that foam working for ya! How about a pencil/pen/scissor/thumbtack holder? If he made it a little bigger he could have incorporated all kinds of widgets! How about a Palm cradle cutout? I think this guy is on to something!

It's the Mon Calamari approach to case design.

It looks like something the "redneck neighbor" would have come up with.
