Anyone know how to enable 3D accel for ATi cards under XFree86? I've read some stuff that suggests that only Nvidia based cards have "true" acceleration. I'm currently using RedHat 7.2 with I think Xfree86 4.1 (or 4.0.1 I can't remember). Any help would be appreciated.

if you're using RedHat 7.2 then I believe the shipped version of Xfree86 is 4.1.0.3, which is current enough.
what ATI chip/card are you using specifically?
either way, you'll probably want to check out dri.sourceforge.net
good luck.

I'm using an ATi Rage Mobility with 8MB of RAM (it's a laptop). And it was also my understanding that DRI came with XFree86 4.1 and up.

yeah, DRI does come with RedHat 7.2's Xfree, but it might not be as updated as you can get. I don't know for certain. But you can get binaries from sourceforge.net. There are also instructions there on how to get it working. I think it's as simple as tweaking your XF86Config-4 file, but I might be misremembering. Anyhoo, if there is any question as to whether or not it's actually accelerating 3D stuff, just fire up Tuxracer and you'll know within seconds. If you didn't install it originally, it should be on your RedHat CDs in rpm format. I guess that assumes you've got the CDs. If not, I can email the rpm to you, or something.

A Rage Mobility with only 8MB would most likely be a Mach64 based chip. No 3D accel yet, support is improving (very, very slowly) in the DRI CVS. In other words, sorry, not yet.

ATI Rage Mobility M1 - based on the Rage Core.

Should be acceleration. I'm not up to speed on my Xfree Accel as I should be, but I'm pretty sure there are some accelerated features on that chip.

Accelerated, yes. Accelerated in XFree86 4.*, not yet. You'll need XFree 3.3.6 to use the existing Utah-GLX work, or you'll have to wait if/until the current DRI hackers get something good.

Thanks for the help guys I've gotten the latest release for DRI, I just haven't had a chance to try it yet. My little munchkin over here likes to take the optical mouse from me so it's hard to get work done until he's asleep.

Anapex, just wanted to let you know that the latest 4.2 Xfree supports the ATI chips.

Here's a cut and paste.

"Accelerated support is provided for Mach64, Rage, Rage 128 and Radeon chips by the "ati" driver, as is unaccelerated support for all of the others except the Mach8 and some early Mach32 chips."

Looks like it's got acceleration now.

heh, after re-reading the post, I gather you where looking for OpenGL acceleration under X. Not hardware acceleration for X display.

My bad.
