Corrupted Windows Graphics

Sun Nov 16, 2008 12:35 am

Hey all,

This is a pic of the weird graphics that happens rarely.

I have no idea what it is.

http://picasaweb.google.com/breshey/MyP ... 8632140802

All I can say is the title of the pic "stupid windows"

It happened with this graphics card (9600gs) and the old one (7900gs).
I have windows xp x64.

Any ideas/help would be great.

I'm not sure what could cause that, but you can give this a shot.

Right click on My Computer, go to Properties. Under the advanced tab, click Performance Settings, and click on Adjust for Best Appearance.

Worth a look.

My first thought was bad video memory, but since it's happening with two different cards it probably isn't that.

My second choice would be a driver problem... given that nvidia don't have the best reputation for 64bit drivers.

Finally I see you've done some overclocking... could be that it's not 100% stable, that seems possible since you only get this issue occasionally.

Since XP graphics are software-mode, it's possible that your RAM and/or your installation are corrupt.

Is it possible you have Image Sharpening enabled in the nVidia control panel? Display subsection, Adjust desktop color settings.

It's a bit strange. From the looks of it, it looks like transparencies aren't working for the various icons, except the My Computer icon and the one for "shortcut to UFO". I'm tempted to say that the GDI subsystem is corrupted or otherwise this is a video driver issue.

Try to uninstall the nvidia drivers completely then reinstalling the latest one from nvidia. If that doesn't work, then you could always try tweaking the hardware acceleration settings for graphics or the color depth settings. Not ideal, but at least something to try.

^Maybe?

<bows> to Nitrodist!

That was it! It's great now. It fixed it immediately, even without a refresh.
This is so awesome. I figured it was something humiliatingly simple.

Thank you so much,
you guys are all great.

Problem solved,

Although turning down the hardware acceleration did solve the problem in windows, it makes games unplayable. I found a better solution was (in the same menu) to UNcheck "Enable write combining" and turn the hardware acceleration to full again. This doesn't seem to mess with the games at all and windows hasn't had any problems since.

Re: Corrupted Windows Graphics ??

Nvidia 9600GS - Dell XPS
Recently my Gaming apps ( BF2 , BFBC2 , BF2142, etc ) started to load and crash before the splash screen.
After uninstalling and reinstalling drivers ( Nvidia v 285.58 ) sytem will not reboot with new drivers.
Monitor searches for a video device, but no reboot to XP SP3.
After uninstalling Nvidia drivers and rebooting with standard VGA drivers XP booted with no other errors,
just no higher graphics. ( XP splash screens are corrupted with horixontal lines in rows across the screens )
but video switches into VGA display adapter ( default )and boots fine !?!??!?!?
I have also installed older versions of Nvidia software - still no joy !

Could my problem be related to this Thread ?

Any suggestions ?

Thanks,
Glenn C
