GTX295 = Disable Screen Saver

Mon Jan 12, 2009 10:47 pm

GTX295 is good for around 7200PPD / GPU, so we're good for ~14500PPD for the card. Temps are cooler than the 9800GX2 but not by a whole lot.

I'm not having a lot of stability OCing it, but we'll see how it does with a small shader clock boost. Like all Nvidia's, it squeals like a piggy.

Re: GTX295 Folding

Tue Jan 13, 2009 4:07 pm

I ran into an odd problem that I don't recollect seeing the problem with a 9800GX2. The GTX295 replaced a 9800GX2.

The GTX295 would fold properly yielding ~7000PPD/core according to Fahmon. The next morning, I see that GPU1 had slowed down dramatically and drop to 2500PPD all night. I would play around with the machine and the performance increased back up to ~7000PPD without any real rhyme or reason for the drop and subsequent improvement.

After a day of fooling around with competing Linux guests, affinities, priorties and whatnot... here is the deal:

I had my screen saver set to come on at 10minutes. Of course I didn't have a graphically intensive screen saver, but it was the blank screen saver. Still having the blank screen saver killed the performance of GPU1. I turned off the screen saver and we'll see if it calms down.

I should rename this thread to "GTX295 = Disable those screen savers"

Wow, 14,000 PPD from a single card is just awesome. So could you run 2 or 3 of these on a mobo that has more than one x16 slot and have potentially a 42,000 PPD computer? That would equal 20+ of my C2D's just to match a single computer in PPD's!

*boggle*
For with what measure you measure it will be measured to you.

Nice. Put four of these on a SkullTrail mobo for a 56000+ppd monster. I'll do it for TR if I win a lottory.

Plus the 4000PPD from the remaining 3 cores of the Q6600 should yield around 18000PPD.

If you are thinking of setting up a multi-GPU folding machine, do yourself a favour and ensure all the graphic adapters are the same or you may get funky issues.

There is a interesting comment as to why this blank screensaver slowdown is occuring: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 295#p78788

The card may go into a low power mode which needs to be deactivated.

Hey Pinto Bean! You run 3 copies of the standard folding client along with your GPU clients with a Q6600? Do you set the GPU clients to a specific CPU core? Do you use the same -0, -1, -2 flags with the console client as you do when running multiple GPU clients?

The standard folding client is for weanies! :-P

I run 2 Ubuntu Linux SMP guests in VMware:

Vmware Guest 1: Core 0+1 Priority Belownormal
Vmware Guest 2: Core 0+1+2 Priority Low
GPU 0 and 1: Core 3 Priority Normal

Technically, I should be able to run Vmware Guests 2 on core 2+3, and leave scraps for the GPU clients... but somehow they conflict and drop the performance of one of the GPU guests to 50%.

Thanks Beany! I'll give this setup a go!! :P

The config I mentioned was specifically for the machine with the GTX295. The High speed GTX295 GPU's are throttled if they share a core with an SMP client.

If you are running lower end GPU's, you should be able to share them just fine with SMP.

In that case, use

SMP1: Core 0+1 Low Priority
SMP2: Core 2+3 Low Priority
GPU's: Pick a core and set the priority to normal

I have 8800 & 9800 series GPUs that I would be pairing with the SMP clients. Will they play nicely together? :o

You should be fine. The 9800 and 8800 are pretty much the same card as I understand it.

Just split the cards up on different core's and keep the priority above the smp client priority.

I think I will play around with your suggestions to see if I can get my SMP clients, in virtual, back up and running. It's just too weird sitting here watching idle cores :)

Here is the trick that has worked for me:

1. Config the GPU Client "Core Priority" on Advanced tab to "Slightly Higher"

2. Run GPU Client Normal Priority

3. Run SMP client Low Priority

With this setup on the 182.08 drivers, I'm able to run 2x SMP client on each pair of cores, and GTX295 sharing the same cores with the SMP.

The SMP WU units were crap for the last month, kakking 50% of my SMP output. That and low output GPU WU's killed me.

Times are good for now. We'll see how long it lasts for. Even Segfault spooled back up.

There are a lot of BIG folders coming up, so everyone has to increase their game, or sink into oblivion.

I have to tell you Pinto Beany, I am impressed! That's a nice looking points graph! 8)

What is spooky is it is almost identical to this one!! :o

Wow, and the relationship is almost logarithmic for the past three days. If we take this assumption further, then I feel we should move all UGN folders over to JPinto... If we can raise his folding 100k per day, that would equate to a 1000k increase in TR PPD!!!

Correct assumption. Please move your points over to my userid as soon as reasonable, so that TR can take a quantum leap forward.

Thanks Guys! :-)
