Mp3 over surround

Fri Apr 10, 2009 7:05 pm

Hey, I was wondering if there was any way to play normal mp3 files over surround sound systems. Is this at all possible?

Yeah....you pipe the output from your soundcard (whether coax, optical, or individual channel outs) into your surround sound receiver and let it work its magic. You can also feed a stand alone MP3 player into your receiver and achieve the same result.

Just plug in the cables :)

Note: you won't magically get output from channels other than the front left and front right, as music is simply 2-channel stereo. However, in the receiver that you're using, you probably have a "matrix" mode or something similar, that will allow you to copy the sound from the front speakers to the rear/side/center/etc as you choose.

In foobar2000 you can convert stereo to 4 channels.
