Slim PSU for uATX SFF enclosure

Wed Apr 15, 2009 1:43 am

Hey party people. The PSU in my Apevia X-Qpack seems to have died. It is wired for ATX compatibility, but is only about 5" deep. This provides clearance for its wires and those of the DVD burner. I'm having a hell of a time finding measurements of PSUs, but most quality ones seem to be generic ATX ones and will likely be too deep.

Any suggestions? The system runs 3 HDDs, the DVD drive, a Pentium e5200, and a few of the Enermax Enlobal fans. Pretty sure I could get away with 300w, but whatever.

As always, thanks.

You'll have to check the dimensions carefully, but you may be able to find something here. Or google for "SFX Power Supply"

ATX and micro-ATX power supplies have the same height and width. The difference is 40mm (1.6") of depth. Search at your favorite e-tailer for a decent micro-ATX PSU with 80+% efficiency, ATX12V connectors (20+4 pin main connector) and a PCIe 6-pin plug.

I thought with a shorter-depth optical drive (new ones manufactured in the last 2 years?), you may get away with a full ATX PSU in the X-QPack?
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

SFX was the money acronym. Didn't know they classified 'em like that.

THX JAE, I'll be grabbing an 80+ model. Don't need the PCIE connector, the bad boy is powering my WHS.

Seasonic it is.

I have the exact same case and stuffed a 700W OCZ gamestream PSU in it. You don't need to pay extra and get underpowered small PSUs, just don't try to put any of the oversized models in it.

The cable routing was a little tight, and it helped a lot that the second 5.25" bay was empty. Modular would be a great idea 8)

I have a standard Corsair HX620 in my X-Qpack2. (Not the original X-Qpack.) It is a tight fit, but does make it. That it is modular is a huge help in the small case.

My X-Qpack2's original power supply is 140mm long.

SeaSonic M12II supplies are listed as W150, L160, H86 mm. Newegg has 430W and 500W versions for $70 and $80, respectively. Both are modular.

The Corsair HX520 is $90AR and is 150x150x86mm, some 10 mm shorter than the SeaSonic and only 10mm longer than my original X-Qpack2 power supply.

Measure your clearances and know that these are modular supplies, so you can remove excess cabling -- which helps a lot. They do have a higher power rating than you were looking for, but there aren't many modular supplies in that range and in an X-Qpack, I would definitely strongly consider a modular power supply.

I think that most of the SFF power supplies are for specific cases and don't use a normal mounting pattern. The X-Qpack really just has a short conventional ATX power supply.

Most manufacturer pages (see the second tab on the lower left on Newegg product pages) have sizes mentioned.
