Memory for MSI 790FX-GD70

Sun Jun 14, 2009 11:30 am

After having my rig for four years, I've decided that it's about time for an upgrade. (I built my rig just as AGP graphic cards were going out of style.)

I've been out of the PC building scene for awhile, but I think I've managed to come up with a spec that will function so far. I'm considering an AMD3 cpu, and the MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard seems like a solid base to start with. However, I'm a little unclear about it's memory standards. Newegg states that it's memory standard is DDR3 2133 OC. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the OC stands for overclocked, doesn't it?

What type of memory should I use in this board to take full advantage of it?

yes it means overclocked

well it really depends on what you find value in
DDR3 1600 is just fine
do you want to spend and extra 100$ to squeeze a bit more out?
if you dont do heavy video encoding or pro max gaming with water cooling you probably could care less and have no need for high DDR3
so save a few dollars

somethings to be aware of
many BIOS are buggy still with the new hardware, your memory might register wrong or have compatibility issues
be sure to check what is compatible and how many sticks to use at what speeds

I just did a build with the MSI 790FX-GD70. I wanted over 4GB so I'm using XP64 SP2. I bought the OCZ Platinum DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000). I am able to run 4 X 2GB sticks at DDR3 1600 at 1.61V on the DDR3 at 8-8-8-24-32-2T. Runs like a champ. I Have not yet figured out the voltages to get the NB speed up from 2000 to 2400.

OCZ makes a ddr3 memory esp. for AMD.

http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/m ... md_edition

They claim that it makes special use of page file size access or some such thing.

OCZ’s newest Titanium AM2 Special kits are optimized to leverage AMD’s sophisticated DDR2 platform for enhanced real world computing experience. With 11 column address bit support by the AM2 memory controller, the number of addresses in each row or page can be as high as 2048 individual entries for a page size of 16kbit. Unlike modules based on standard 10-bit column address chips with an “8k” page size, the new Titanium AM2 Special modules take advantage of the AM2 controller’s feature set and provide a single rank solution with 2GB density using “16k” pages. This allows the controller to stay “in page” twice as long compared to standard memory architectures, thereby achieving unparalleled performance.

However on reading this again, it looks like all they are claiming is that higher density memory works better. I don't know if this is old hat. Read some on the OCZ forum and could not see where they were making a great distinction bt. their "AMD" and other ddr3 memory.

I have never seen anyone (TR included) a benchmark of this memory. It would be interesting to see if the benefit is real and or significant.

However, it sounds good on paper. 4 gig is 85$ on the egg. :-?

Get some DDR3-1333 or thereabouts. Faster (or 'tweaked') memory will cost a lot more but not bring any improvement outside of synthetic tests. I have no idea why Newegg would say DDR3-2133 when the CPU itself won't support anything above 1333.

What are the rest of your proposed parts (esp. GPU/CPU), what games would you play and at what resolution?

I've purchased two sets of these for my AM3 build. Not the best timings, but it cheap and and has worked well for me.

If you're planning on running 4 sticks I think it may revert to a lower speed.
Ahhhhhhh!

Little update...
Memory now runs fine at DDR3 1600 at 1.65V and NB runs fine at 2400 at 1.12V and no crashes. Had to cool the right bits.
