Modular PSUs: Where are the gems?

Wed Jul 29, 2009 10:02 am

So last night I tried plugging in my new WD 1TB Caviar Green, and I seems that my PSU decided to give up the ghost. Actually quite disappointed in that, since it's an Enermax Noisetaker 600W and this September will only be 5 years old. Siggy has system specs.

Anyways, I'm looking for a good replacement unit, and I'm finding myself at a cross road. My case is an Antec P180, so with the tight quarters underneath, the flexibility of a modular PSU appeals to me. However, I can't really seem to find anything that works. I was thinking about going with the OCZ 700W ModXStream, but HardOCP's review and follow up were pretty unforgiving. Conversely, the PC Power & Cooling 750W Quad CrossFire looks perfect, if it were modular. Great performance and reviews, and an exceptional price.

Does anyone have a modular PSU that really has a good value proposition, or should I just bite the bullet, the Quad SLI unit, and deal with the excessive cables?

Corsair makes a couple of great modular PSU's.

I have the 1000watt model and its awesome. But they do have a couple of smaller watt models if you dont need 1000watts.

I was looking at the Corsair's, but their modual HX line seems like it's excessively priced compared to their TX line.

Yes, but this is a case of "You get what you pay for". Corsair's modular PSU's are top notch in design and components choices and seeing how the quality of the PSU can affect the entire rest of the system, I dont like to skimp on PSU's.

Dual transformers, flat modular cables, top of the line caps all make for a very high quality package.

If you aren't going for the HX PSUs the TR review seemed to like the modular Zalman

The Gigabyte Odin did alright as well, and I think I've seen that one reasonably cheap here and there.

The Hyper Type R did well.

All of those three would be workable alternatives. My vote is still the HX though....

If you think the HX is overpriced, then don't look at the Enermax MODU82+ then.

I agree , if you don't want or like the HX go and take a look at the Seasonic models , they are also top notch.

Isn't the HX620 just a seasonic unit inside?

Seasonic makes the HX untis along with most PSU's , probably get better
price with Seasonic.

Think I'm going to go with the Corsair TX650W instead. Just can't stand to spend an extra $100 for what basically breaks down to the PSU being modular rather than fixed.

First want to go home and pull the existing PSU out of my server box and see if that does indeed fix things up.

Make sure the old one was plugged into the wall. I bought a new PSU once because I thought the old one was broken, but it was just unplugged.

Using the HX620 here; silent, stable and modular. Given that, I'd recommend them.

Huh? :o

650TX is $100 with a $20 MIR
620HX is $140 with a $30 MIR

So before MIR's, the difference is $40, after MIR, the difference is $30 (plus extra sales tax implications). Where did you get that "extra $100" idea from? Granted, the TX features a single 12V rail with more wattage, so it should give you more juice should you require it.

If your sig is your current build, all you really need is the HX520.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Newegg Canada, not US. And I was comparing it to the HX850, and rounding. Compared to the HX620, price difference is about $55 after taxes and shipping. And the single rail does count for a fair bit to me.

Yeah , the 520 should be plenty for that rig. I am running the 940 (sig) @ 3.6 and a 4890 oc
with a 500 W.

That is the same one I have but its the 500 w , that is HX quality , I have the HX 620 in my Intel machine I can tell you both PSUs are quiet and
performance is awesome , there rails dont move much from idle to full load either.

The M12 is getting old and it shows in the comparatively lower amps on the 12V rails.

Even a ~650W unit should be enough, unless those upgrades include like 3 graphics card and a highly overclocked processor.

True, but the same could be said about the 620HX which, as far as I can tell, is pretty much the same internally as the M12.

Doesn't the HX 620 have that load sharing capability on the 12V rails, that allows it to draw power from across rails if required? Wouldn't that sort of alleviate the problems lower amps per rail would cause? Am I way off about that?

Why don't you look at Cooler Master SilentPro M500 or M600? I have the 600 version, and it's great. Low noise, stable voltages, single 12V rail...

Not really. The M12 has that extra 6cm fan which *may* add to the noise a little bit. I always consider the Corsair HX being the S12 with single fan and modular cabling instead of closer to the M12. BTW I just checked. The M12 600W unit does 576W max on the 12V rails combined and the 620HX does 600W max combined, obviously a newer (and hopefully slightly better) design. Now if you are talking the M12ii that's a different story.

The corsair 450HX is modular, cheap and will easily provide enough wattage for your system.

Just fair warning on going with a non-mod power supply, the premium is really for saving you all that money on tylenol from all that banging your head against the case because the cable management is a mess because your power supply comes with everything and the kitchen sink and you're case isn't exactly an HAF. That was my problem, and sure I saved a few bucks, but I was wishing I spent the extra money when the parts came to save me the cable-gami nightmare that awaited me. Unless that's you're thing/don't care how messy your case innards are.

Just stuff the extra cables in spare drive bays or something. In anything larger than a mini-ATX chassis you shouldn't have too much trouble with cable management.

As others have said, the HX 520W will be more than adequate for your system. I've got one powering a fairly hungry system and can't recommend it highly enough.
