The wireless adapter went out on my parent's PC so I decided to replace it with a powerline adapter. I already am running a set of Linksys PLE200s on my own PC, but it seems they have been replaced with a newer model and are out of stock everywhere. I figured any adapter would work, so I ordered a Trendnet TPL-202E adapter. This doesn't seem to be working though, and while the power and ethernet LEDs light up, the HomePlug one does not. I installed the software, but it won't even recognize that the device is plugged into the computer. Did I get a faulty device or is there an issue between using two different models of adapters?

I'd put my money on defective hardware. Call the tech support and see what you need to do.

No, it's more of a "teach a man to fish" thing. Since you make an issue of it, I will elaborate.

Q: Your parent's wireless NIC is broken. What do you do?
A: Repair/replace? No thanks, I'd rather opt for a more expensive connectivity option, with less throughput.
Q: Oh no, the adapter is out of stock at Newegg. Do you shop elsewhere?
A: I can't; a gypsy that I annoyed put a curse on my Newegg tattoo--every time I order somewhere other than Newegg, the egg hatches a little. I don't want to know what's inside.
Q: OK, here's a different adapter. Do you check to see if it's compatible?
A: Nope; the best time to find out something won't work is after you've already purchased it.
Q: It's not working. Troubleshoot, or do cursory research into the problem?
A: I'd rather ask people with less experience than I have and get butthurt if anyone hints at my questionable sense of judgment.
