Quadro FX 5600 in a Silverstone SG02F?

Sat Oct 17, 2009 5:12 pm

Hi,

Do you think it would be feasible to run a Nvidia Quadro FX 5600 inside a Silverstone SG02-F case, and if so, would you have any recommendations for the motherboard, PSU and cooling choices?

The background: We need a machine to use for demos of an 3D/stereographic interactive artwork (we're media arts students) which I can take on a plane as carry-on. The 5600 is a fixed item (loaned by our school, along with the projector), and the SG02-F seems to be the smallest case I could find that fits 12" cards (and is also cheap - we're students, you see!)

If anybody has any other suggestions for alternative methods, they'd be very welcome~!

Here's the details of the SG02-F: http://www.silverstonetek.com/products/ ... F&area=usa
And the 5600: http://www.nvidia.com/docs/IO/40049/qua ... asheet.pdf

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Oh, I forgot to mention, for what it's worth, we need to run Linux (Ubuntu, probably 8.10) on this machine.

That should work fine so long as you don't use it with a Mini-ITX motherboard, which I think could cause the top of the card to come into conflict with the hard drive. On a Micro-ATX it should work just fine.

Thanks!

Would you have any suggestions for a micro-ATX board? I used to build PCs, but it's been quite a few years since and things have definitely moved on...

I guess one of the main concerns is one that can fit the x16 Nvidia Quadro FX 5600 comfortably, along with a Core 2 Duo chip, and plenty of RAM. Don't need any optical drives in there, and was considering an SSD HD (don't need much disk space, and figured that SSD is cooler/quieter). I have no idea what considerations I should make for power? The graphics card eats 171W, according to Nvidia.

Any hints (even other URLs that might help) would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

You need to spell out a budget. You're talking anywhere from a $70 motherboard and $50 processor to $130 motherboard and $300 processor as available options in microATX land.

Oh, of course~
I was hoping that $800 would be good for the whole lot: case, mobo, cpu, psu/fans, memory, HD, shipping etc.

Case is $70
HD ~$100 (A reliable but small SSD seems to be appropriate (heat & sound), and 16Gb would be plenty of room)
Memory: 4x2GB or 2x4GB (DDR2 800?) ~$300? (the app is pretty memory-intensive)
Psu/fans - no idea what is appropriate...nor what to budget?
No need for optical drives etc.

Cpu: Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad, I guess $150 to $200 is reasonable. I'm not sure if our app can really make much use of the extra cores in the Quad yet, but it would be a good investment for future software upgrades.

I think $120 is fine for the mobo.
6x USB 2.0 ports is pretty essential (interactive interfaces)

Am I off target with any of this?

I'd look at a Core i5 if I were you. It is hard to recommend a decent Core 2 Quad when the i5 750 is $199.99 and there are several good Micro-ATX P55 motherboards for $120 and under.

As far as RAM goes, DDR3 1333 RAM is going for $40-50 bucks on Newegg, 8 GB should run under $200: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147%201052429248%201052307859&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&Order=PRICE

For PSU, I'd probably select a 400-450W Corsair PSU, that shouldn't cost more than $70 bucks.

For fans, I'd maybe pick up another 80mm case fan. The stock CPU heatsink will be fine.

This should all run under your $800 dollar budget easily.

Personally I'd go with a different case. Something like the Cooler Master Elite 341. I say this knowing that the Cooler Master is taller (though a bit more narrow) and size is important but it will be much easier to work with, be easier to keep the system properly cool no matter the environment and much easier to work with when building or should a problem come up.

Also, there is currently an OCZ Modpower Pro $60 on Newegg. 500W unit and it is modular.

I'd go with the Core i5 and P55 motherboard option as well.

This is going to reach the limits of your budget (though the Elite 341 is a bit cheaper than the SG02F) but probably worth it.

If you guys are just demoing artwork, why would you need a quad core?

Wow, this is brilliant feedback, thanks everyone~

Hadn't really considered the i5 before, but I guess I should have! Now I've read reviews, this seems to be a veritable bargain. The P55 mobo also seems to have great reviews, thanks for the pointers.

@Chunc: The reason we need a good CPU is that our artwork is a big interactive artificial life simulation, many organisms living within a medium which is a big fluid simulation, the latter being the big CPU hog. I'm hoping to update the code to take better advantage of multi-core. Here's a screen capture, if you're interested: http://artificialnature.mat.ucsb.edu/fluidspace.html

@Skrying: We were thinking of the SG02-F case for portability (we need to carry this thing on long-haul flights), and to fit in the 12" graphics card that we're being loaned.

Thanks everyone!

If your going to delete the ODD and swap out the HDD for a SSD, you might want to get this one: Corsair Extreme Series CMFSSD-32D1 2.5" 32GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk Its $150.

Ok, I watched the videos on your website, and that's pretty awesome. It'd be cool to see this in person.

Thanks!

So here's what I've got, pieced together from all your guys' advice. This is all designed to be portable (carry-on luggage) and to fit an Nvidia 5600 (a 12" 16x PCIe card on loan to us, see http://www3.pny.com/support/media//File ... ide_v1.pdf):

Case: Silverstone SG02F
http://www.aerocooler.com/shop.cart?act ... d=CASSSG2B
$70

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813128405
$110

CPU: Intel Core i5 2.66GHz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115215
$200

RAM: 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 4x2GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... rder=PRICE
~$200

HD: Corsair Extreme Series CMFSSD-32D1 2.5" 32GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820233089
$150

Power:
The graphics card needs 171W (PCI bus power, two external PCI Express power connectors).
Had these suggestions:
SeaSonic M12II SS-430GM 430W ($70): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817151057
Rosewill RP600V2-S-SL 600W ($60): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... _-17182032

Fans:
Many reviews suggest an extra heatsink for the i5 CPU, seems like the CoolerMaster hyper 212 is popular.
http://www.google.com/products?client=s ... =en&tab=wf
~$30
Plus, another case fan just to be sure
~$10

Total (minus whatever shipping): $840.

Sound good?

You need to be a bit careful here. That Coolermaster heatsink is not going to fit in the SG02. Not even close to be honest. You're going to be limited to low profile heatsinks in the SG02. Here are some of the better options:

Scythe Big Shuriken: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835185129
Nexus LOW-7000: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835610010
Cooler Master GeminiII S: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835103046

I'd lean towards the Cooler Master and Scythe, with the Cooler Master taking the lead seeing as how it is actually in stock. The Nexus would be a tight fit.

For fans you're limited to 80mm within the SG02. You should go with a Scythe KAMA FLEX SA0825FDB12l. Best overall value in 80mm land right now. It's air flow and noise level measurements are actually rather accurate.

With the PSU you should go with the Seasonic.

That is really cool.
For with what measure you measure it will be measured to you.
