HP LP2475W Vs Dell U2410

Tue Oct 13, 2009 3:21 pm

Which is better?
After reading the tftcentral reviews, I'm inclined to the HP.
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2410.htm
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hp_lp2475w.htm

The dell seems to be laggier, except for gaming mode, which could potentially ruin colors.
Plus the HP is cheaper, and available from multiple sources online.

Anyone have personal experience with using both?

Looking for a good gaming/movie screen.

It's probably neck and neck. There is an extensive discussion over on the LCD thread on AnandTech (the last couple dozen pages of the thread). The HP is better claibrated out-of-the-box and has better blacks than the Dell; however, the Dell has 12-bit internal processing. Both need real calibration if you plan to work with color sensitive applications (e.g., web site design, photo &/ video editing). The sRGB & color space issues are non-issues if you are using color-space aware software (including Firefox and PhotoShop). Just make sure you are in "standard mode" then use something like the i1.display.2 for accurate calibration.

I own a pair of the HP LP2475W monitors and couldn't be happier. If I were buying today, I'd make the same choice because of the "blacks" -- I'm photo editing, not gaming.

[H] forum has a thread on it too, did they say the blacks are better on the HP too? I thought that thread gave the nod to the Dell because input lag is better on the Dell? :o
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

I've read a couple of places that input lag is slightly better (meaning less) on the Dell in "standard" mode and essentially nonexistent in gaming mode. I'm not a gamer. What little lag exists on the HP doesn't bother me. I do use the HP as a television monitor, including watching fast-action movies (in 720p and 1080P). I no longer own a TV set. I have a satellite box and tuner cards & LG blue ray optical drives in my computers.

Been reading the H thread.
The dell monitor seems to have a lot of problems.
Green to pink color shifting, and other things.
I think it was also mentioned that the panel gets 12-bit? through dithering, which is also why srgb mode looks bad.

HP it is then.
I'll hold off until black friday or christmas though.
Either that or until LED backlit becomes mainstream.

My DS-245w seems to get better after every poor review I read on these panels.

Yo l33t-g4mer, I am selling the NEC 20WGX2, which they use as the reference IPS monitor in the article posted. You can probably get it from me cheaper than you would the HP monitor.

maybe.
Gotta have low input lag though.

PM me around Christmas if you still have it and want to sell.

I'm basically looking because I need something for my second computer.
My 17" crt is too small (1024x768 for 75hz), and my 21" needs fixed.

I may just end up having the 21" crt repaired. (if possible.)
Damn LCD's suck.
How we ever moved from great monitors to these pieces of junk, I don't know.
Monitor technology was even beginning to shrink the massive bulk near their death.
Oh, well. Take what you can get, I suppose.

You are so right. I gave my boss my 19" NEC FE991SB since I never use it and his CRT is going bad, and when I hooked it up again I felt a twang at seeing how awesome its picture was. I love my Dell 2405FPW mainly because of its size and the picture is okay, but it can't hold a finger to a good CRT. The masses have been brainwashed to settle for inferior quality just so they can save desk space. Damn yuppies.
A most unfortunate, Freudian, double entendre is that hotel named "Budget Inn."

Two comments:
1. A lot of those [H] folks are really critical and will call in a return even for a couple of dead pixels. So some issues seem overhyped you have to read it with the proper context.
2. The pink hue thing is also on the HP. Some reported they can work around the issues by adjusting the settings and good calibration.

I think you will be doing mostly gaming so do all that stuff really matter to you? You are right, no LCD is perfect. However, large CRTs are just too heavy and consume too much power (let's not get into the hazardous materials since LCDs have their fair share). I would not want to carry another 100lbs monitor around myself, would you?

Sorry for brining this thread back to life. I find myself in the situation where I need to upgrade from one LCD to a dual setup. Reading the comments here and some of the comments at Hardforum. I've managed to become more confused. From what I can gather:
  • Both Dell & HP LCDs have the same panel?
  • The HP monitor has darker blacks
I guess my question is, what advise for a monitor would you guys give for someone who plays games on the PC and enjoys watching movies/TV shows?

The Dell and the HP have almost the same panel -- the Dell is using a newer revision that allows 12-bit internal color which could translate into slightly greater color accuracy. Yes, the HP has slightly better (and darker) blacks. The Dell has less lag. Both are great monitors.

Probably the best resource is the Monitor thread over on AnandTech, particularly the 1st three posts and the last several dozen posts. There is a lot of discussion about both monitors there.

I'm buying a new monitor shortly.I have looked extensively and read everything I can find around the Net on both the Dell and the HP and have concluded the Dell is the better buy.

After looking at that thread at AnandTech (thanks btw edh), that Dell monitor is looking like a winner. :)
