I just built an xp1800+ machine and I've transfered over my voodoo 5500 to the new system and I'm getting a little choppy game play when I play Medal of Honor Allied Assault and Jedi Knight II. Setting the best screen resolution produces the choppy effect and peaks out my processor at 100%. Dropping just the color from 32 to 16 bit seems to fix the problem all together. Is it really worth it / will I see that much of a difference if I go out and buy a new card?

I was playing at both 1024*768 32bit and 800*600 32bit and getting some chop. Droping only the color bits to 16 helped a lot.

You could always sell it to me....Is it PCI or AGP?

Or you could use the WickedGL driver...I think it supports those games.

Its an AGP card and with my system, I ended up with a 2362 3DMarks 2001 score. From the looks of it thats pretty crappy. Will changing the driver to the Wicked GL will improve it noticibly?

From what I've read the 3dfx driver doesn't support t&l processing. Is this true, does it matter, and will a new driver like the wickedgl driver by itself provide this functionality?

I'm pretty sure none of the 3dfx chipsets had T&L (GeForce was the first, at least mainstream, th at I know of). The driver may give you better performance though, but it probably won't give you any miracles. As Nelliesboo mentioned, if you're willing to drop some cash, the TI4200 would make a good upgrade when it's out.

The WickedGL driver was about 5% or so faster than the 3dfxopengl.dll, at least back when I had my Voodoo3.

And the 16 bit color on the Voodoo3/4/5 is actually pretty good IMO, so I wouldn't have a problem going down to 16 bit on a voodoo card (as opposed to a Nvidia card, where 16 bit color shows alot of banding)

The x3dfx drivers are supposed to be even better. http://www.x3dfx.com

Care or not about the guts of the computer, I thought it might be relevant as to the speed of gameplay. That said, I pull the system Spec.

How should the 4200 thats soon due out compare to the Geforce4 TI4600? Is it worth the bread to buy the TI4600?

The GeForce4Ti 4200 will do everything that the GeForce4Ti 4600 will do, except that it will do it a little slower.

The GeForce4Ti line looks like this:
Model Core Memory
4600 300 325DDR/650 MHz
4400 275 275DDR/550
4200 250 250DDR/500
Is it worth the bread to buy the TI4600?
In a word: No.
The GeForce4Ti 4400 or 4200 or ATI Radeon 8500LE are a much better deal than the GeForce4Ti 4600. By the time that a game comes out that will look better on the GeForce4Ti 4600 than on a 4200, you will probably be able to buy the 4600 or something better for less than half of the price that it demands today.

Edit: Fixed the incorrect division by two. Doh!

OK, I guess I'm still not sure what do with my voodoo then. I'd like to wait for the 4200 but I'm all about instant gratification. I'll likely end up with a 4600 since nobody knows for sure about the 4200. Why would one want to keep the voodoo, even as a classic card?
