Best Bittorrent Client for OS X?

Fri Oct 30, 2009 2:49 am

Title says it (asks it?) all really...

In my Windows days I always found uTorrent to be the best. In Linux I think Transmission sucks but it seems to get props for Mac. I don't do anything fancy with my downloading. I just want something that 'just works' as the saying goes.

Your views are appreciated.

Pedro.

Vanilla Bittorrent shouldn't even be an option.

Let's see then. Vuze can be slow as all hell, and uTorrent is still in beta regarding a Mac port.
Now while Vuze is indeed chock-full of customisations, it's also full of bloat, advertisements and excrement, so I can only recommend microtorrent for you (µTorrent, in case it went over your head making you bash Google).

If you've got an Intel machine, it's uTorrent. Low memory footprint, good responsiveness, native implementation. If you're using PPC you only have one choice that is none of those things - and that's Vuze. Anything else is slow to download.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Vuze is the best on all platforms. Period. Using the DHT tracker it automatically finds more peers then your regular client and as a result, your transfer will finish faster.

It is also the most customizable torrent client out there.

Good point Adi. That said, I only use torrents to grab Linux distros (no, really!) so I always max out my connection anyway...

Err... no. You're basing a software being the best on that one aspect. An aspect that only matters that assumes you need more peer connections in order to max out your connection. Most users don't need that amount of customization (uTorrent is far more customizable than I'd ever need or want) nor the bloat. Torrent applications are something I want to run in the background, using at most half my connection rate. I don't use them near enough to want more. Therefore uTorrent is the best for me. Period...

OK. Thanks. If I ever get a Mac, it will probably be one of those MacBook Pros. I remember buying a Black MacBook Pro for Christmas 2008 (I think) for my cousin. The specs sound similar to yours. (I do remember buying it refurbished from the Apple Store shortly after the AL MacBook Pros came out. He is enjoying the MacBook last time I spoke to him about it.)

I'm running Vuze with the classic interface 24/7 on my Core Duo 1.66 Mac mini. It has been solid for the past 3 years.
