So I'm fooling around with a Snow Leopard install on my desktop hardware, and to test out how this Myhack installer thing I read about works.

My hardware is not what we'd call Hackintosh-friendly. Phenom II "X4 B50", AMD 770 chipset with SB710 - but the rest is pretty standard. I actually followed the installer guide pretty closely. It helps that I knew what kexts I needed to get, and it helps that a hacked kernel comes with the installer. So it goes something like this:

What I did on an old eMac G4:
1.) Rip the Snow Leopard DVD to a disk image
2.) Restore the disk image to an 8GB (or larger) thumb drive - I used a Sandisk Cruzer
3.) Run the Myhack installer on the USB drive selecting options appropriate to your hardware
4.) Copy any extra kexts to the /Extra/Extensions folder on the drive and re-run the pfix utility to re-build Extensions.mkext

What I did on my PC:
1.) Boot from the USB drive
2.) Install Snow Leopard
3.) Reboot and boot from the USB drive again, but boot your new install
4.) Run the Myhack installer to install to the hard drive
5.) Copy those extra kexts to /Extra/Extensions on the hard drive and re-run pfix again

All told, it took about an hour and a half. 45 minutes of that was preparing the USB drive. Installing from the USB drive was faster than the DVD, I'm sure, because the "X minutes remaining" started at 35 but it only took about 15. And because I know my hardware (ALC889a, Realtek gigabit ethernet, SB710 running in AHCI mode) everything works. I know Bonjour works because I installed my Brother HL-2140 that's attached to my AEBS. I know Time Machine works because I'm backing up to the hard drive attached to the same AEBS. I have 5.1 audio out and digital out, full GUI and OpenCL acceleration on my video, and all four cores.

In truth, I only had one issue. I wanted to get a few apps I use installed so I actually have something to do. High among my priorities is Finale 2008. That installed with no issues, but when I went to install the Garritan Personal Orchestra, I got an amusing message - "Finale must be installed before installing Garritan Personal Orchestra." Uh, say what? Did you not see what I just finished doing? Other than that, things are fine. I even ran Software Update without a hitch - the one thing I had to do was run pfix after applying 10.6.1, because 10.6.1 rebuilds Extensions.mkext without my Extra folder.

One minor addition to this:

The ALC889a driver I found (HDA Injector + patched Apple HDA) originally would not let the computer go to sleep. I ended up switching to VoodooHDA and rebuilt my Extension kextcache and rebooted and put it to sleep last night. It slept overnight successfully and woke up this morning so I'd call that a success. I can't think of anything this machine should be able to do but can't running OS X. The Hackintosh community has come a long way, baby. Still lusting after a 27" Core i7 iMac tho.

Read the license. You will find that it restricts the use to Apple hardware only. It doesn't matter if you buy the OS or not. You are still violating the EULA.

I suggest you re-read Forum Rule #1 for any mention of EULAs.

1.) No posting links/hints/suggestions/etc for warez/serials/no-cd cracks/keygens/etc. This includes using virtual CD programs or other things to get around copy-protection. There are other places on the Internet where you can get help with those kinds of things. Any post containing such things will be deleted or edited and the poster will receive a warning. Continued posting of such things will result in a ban. This includes unauthorized file sharing of copyrighted materials as well as linking or mentioning sites/sources whose primary purpose is to share such materials.

If Thresher or David see a problem with my thread, they will tell me. I think I'm being targeted here because I mentioned in another thread that an iPC disc is piracy because an iPC disc only comes in torrent form, and pleaded with mthguy to buy Snow Leopard. It's cool, I've got broad shoulders.

We've discussed this a bit.

TR is hardly the only site this info appears on. In fact, it's appeared on Lifehacker, Make, and other sites. Certainly, this site does not condone the act of creating a Hackintosh, it's done at your own risk and you take full responsibility for any violations of an EULA.

So, since we're not really creating any real content on this, I think we're okay. However, if we hear differently, these threads may be shut down with no notice.

I think my dad is going to or has bought Blizzard Kitty for his hackintosh. If i get that bored of windows or Linux, then I'll give this a try.
