Keep my old case for an i7 build or not?

Mon Nov 16, 2009 11:38 am

My s939 system is really starting to show some age, and I'm beginning plans to put together an i7 system over the next 2-3 months. I'm currently using a 4 year old Antec P180, one of the first line I believe. It's got a few scratches but otherwise in good shape. Should I see this as an opportunity to upgrade my case (budget is a factor) or re-use the current one? Have cases (below the extreme enthusiast models, at least) advanced a great deal in that time?

I'm leaning towards keeping the P180 simply for budgetary reasons, but I would like to keep the S939 system as a secondary/server/folding system. What would be a solid inexpensive case for the old system?

If you're keeping the old psu with the s939, consider the Antec Three Hundred. It's at $60 now on Newegg, but frequently dips by $10 if you wait for a few weeks.

I just did the exact same thing. Replaced my s939 X2 4200 system with a core i7, keeping it in the P180. I had to pull the lower-middle fan out because I switched to a longer, modular PSU and it wouldn't work with it still in there. I still have no idea why it took them all the way till the P183 to move that fan in front of the hard drives, and it wasn't' like that at the beginning.

Still, it's still a fine case. The revisions that they made in the 182 and now 183 are definitely a step up, but not critical. I'm planning on getting myself a new case come the new year when I get a new graphics card and HDD as well, but mostly because I also plan on putting the s939 back together in the current case to run as a server. If you're budget constrained, keeping the P180 around is perfectly acceptable.

I've never used this case, so this may be irresponsible, but this case will be $29.99 with free shipping this afternoon on the Newegg Shell Shocker. It starts 1pm PT.
