Are there any out there, and are they any good?

I'm looking for a FPS type game, where 4 people can play on one machine (ala Halo)... tactical games are ok too..

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare games have good split screen. I've spent dozens of hours playing Modern Warfare 2 splitscreen and it's still fun.

COD4 and COD6 are the only games I've seen confirmed on the internetz to have 4-player split screen. I don't own either so I can't help with what performance is like, though.

The truth is that there aren't very many good four player games on the PS3. Even games like Modern Warfare have some serious problems.

Modern Warfare outputs at 600p, giving each player a tiny number of pixels when you divide by four. Then Modern Warfare maps tend to be very busy. There's lots of stuff sitting around and in MW2 there's lots of effects (snow, dust, etc). Personally, I only like to play the map "Rust" when I'm playing with three others.

Rock Band is a fun four player game (or six players with the Beatles Rock Band). You may want to look on PSN for some downloadable games, such as "Calling All Cars."

Motorstorm Pacific Rift has 4 player splitscreen racing + online racing you know .

And so does R2 actually as far as I understood it you can play that game's single player Campaign with up to 8 people online 4 on one PS3 and 4 on another one somewhere in the world that's pretty cool man .

Is there a 4 player bomberman yet for the PS3? That used to be my favourite 4 player game back in the day on the first playstation.

Okay, I know this isn't FPS, or even 4-player (only 3), but I thought I'd share it with you anyway:

It's a co-operative puzzle-action game, 1-3 players in same screen. Me and my friend played through it a few months back. It was quite fun, and it's only 20€ (or was it 15€, I don't remember). It's certainly not the next big hit, but the pricing was low enough to try it. There's also a demo for Windows to try before purchase (PSN didn't have the demo at the time, don't know whether there's one now).

What about Borderlands?

Borderlands local co-op is only 2 players

I know it's not an FPS, but Little Big Planet is local and online 4 player coop. Quite fun, to boot. If you don't like playing levels, you can make your own with 3 others, as well.

Warhawk allows for 4 player offline, and you to join games with up to 28 others online. CoD4:MW1, CoD6:MW2. I think R2 supports 4 but I would have to confirm this one, Resistance 1 does (deathmatch). IIRC post the titan patch UT3 also supports 4 player split screen (non campaign).

We play Ultimate Alliance and it was pretty fun for me and 3 buddies of mine. We have bought UA2 but haven't started our campaign yet.

Since a spammer has bumped this thread anyway, I'd like to get back on topic and recommend You Don't KNow Jack. It's 4 players, using 4 controllers. Everyone gets to answer every question, it's not a "buzz in first" contest at all.

It's worth mentioning that the CoD: BlOps has improved the split-screen experience. They've added bots in offline multiplayer and they've added the ability to have 2 local players playing online together.
