if your landlord has wireless G router, you need a wireless G USB stick
if he has wirless N, get a wireless N stick

Or just get a wireless-N adapter. It's backwards compatible and will allow you to keep up. If they go from G to N, you're already prepared.

I'd get one with an external antenna and WPA2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... &name=WPA2 Why do you say that you need a good receiver? Do you have one now that isn't working well?

Like potatochobit and Evaders said, take advantage of N if that's what your landlord is broadcasting. Is this for a laptop or desktop?

That's a serious looking antenna. You might want to look for a review at a site like http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless. After a quick search I didn't find one though.

Fluctuations may be the result of interference, especially on the 2.4GHz band where a lot of cordless phones live (other things can cause it too -- microwave ovens, etc). If that's the case, a better antenna, or a different placement of the antenna, help. But it might not, in which case only a change at your landlord's end (or an elimination of whatever is causing the interference) will solve it.
