Ditch XBox live. Free online XBox gaming.

I saw this on Tech TV last night and thought it was pretty cool. They connected an XBox to a router that was connected to a PC that was running this XBConnect software. The interface looked pretty cool. You have to have DSL or Cable Modem. It's got to be better than giving B.Gates more money. :D

Here is where you get the software.

You're ready to take your Xbox online, but you don't want to spend $100 plus per year for Xbox Live. Not a problem. XBConnect, a Windows-based application, allows multiple people to connect and play Xbox games on different network segments. Long story short, I can now play Xbox games with my good friend in Switzerland.

How does it work?

On tonight's "Screen Savers" I'll show you XBConnect in action. From a high-level view it tricks the Xbox into thinking it's on a local network segment, enabling Xbox system link games to connect and play against each other.

Although the site doesn't list the details of how XBC accomplishes its great feat, we can assume it creates a small virtual private network between several clients, analyzing packets in real time and forwarding them to the appropriate IP.

How do I set it up?

The simple and easy setup amazed me.

Install the software.
Turn on your Xbox. You'll find an XBC interface similar to that of any online gaming network.
Start gaming!

If you use the software, support its developers. After all, XBConnect only sets you back $14.95.

People have been doing that since before Live was even available, remember people playing Halo over the internet?

Oh, and the software for that was free too, should I be happy that someone does the same exact thing months later, and then charges for it? No thanks.

Live also provides things that this can't.

So can I download the new content, maps, rosters, missions, etc with this? No? Oh... I guess I shouldn't ditch Xbox live then huh?

lol. Xbconnect is only good for Halo. You play soldier of Fortune 2 on Live and then Xbconnect and tell me which service is better. Live is awesome and every Xbox owner should have it.
