About time. The X2 3800 has been at roughly $300 for like 10 months.
I'd love to get one, but I'm not paying $300 to upgrade when single threaded performance will be the same speed as my current single core 64-3200. |

Why did AMD switch to DDR2? Was is really necessary? I thought AMD was doing well with DDR1 [socket 939]. I would have thought they would have continued with 939 until K8L was ready to roll out, that way they will have an entirely new architecture. Based on reviews so far, I dont see any huge benefit of AM2, infact it looks more like a performance loss than gain.

I was going to post a witty comment on how maybe Conroe is not all it's cracked up to be due to the huge price cut on launch day. However after reading about 90% overclocks on unreleased new arch......
Intel's yields must be fantasic. AMD is going to need no less than a miracle to wiggle out of this one. 7/23/06 never forget!!! |

Show me a 4 ghz Conroe overclock on air. Those that we've seen so far are phase change or higher. In fact, the 4 ghz shot on xtremesystems was a LN2 suicide shot

I never thought i would ever say this, but,
Farwell AMD. I've been faithful for 6 straight years, But lo I've seen the future I've seen another more beautiful. I've seen the object of my desire Two months from now she will rule my pc. She will pump out endless frames per second She will make my gaming experience sweet with little slowdown. I've found conroe and she is as beautiful as ... Well she is more beautiful than what you can presently offer. Sorry AMD I've been a loyal fanboy but now conroe calls And I must answer. However hope is not lost for you. I shall wait for you across the river. When you have K8L I shall come calling again. Conroe! Core 2 Duo E6600! Here I come. |

I think something is wrong tho since the XE was/is the 8000 series. It also donīt fit the 1333FSB either at 2.93Ghz and 975X does support 1333.
850$ 3.0Ghz Woodcrest with 1333Mhz FSB vs a 2.93Ghz with 1066Mhz Conroe at 999$ Kinda abit of a move from the original plan: http://image2.sina.com.cn/IT/cr/2006/0429/3907174523.jpg Guess when performance was secured against AM2 the marketing people took over to milk the $$$. Atleast the E6600 keeps it spot and they should OC just like Northwood 2.4C. But a 93$ 805 starts to smell dualcore for everyone, everywhere. |

What about the putative release date. Does anyone think that they want to clear inventories so they put it off for > 2 weeks (again relying on similar linked roadmaps which obviously weren't really roadmaps) ?

AMD really has to fix their pricing for 939. Before phasing it out they better lower the X2's significantly. $300 has been the AMD dual core entry point for too long.
Although I do favor (but not love) AMD, you have to love what Intel is doing now. The Pentium D 805 is ridiculously good for its price. AMD needs to at least get to $200 Dual core before the 805 hits $90. Especially if the $180 Core 2 Duo will beat the 3800+X2 (it probably will). I'm one step away from intel be it a price drop or Core 2 having widespread availability. |

He was right.... These smell of core cpu's with a bigger bus and a little more clock.

I smell price war, I hope AMD's workstation/server market invetment pays off for them now that things are gonna start heating up ;)
2MB cache Conroes eh? Interesting... I'd like to see how that affects the core's performance. |

I'm kind of surprised by the 2.93 rather than 3.0 GHz top end. Wonder why. Not that I had any reason besides chatter here and various linked sites to think it would be the EE. Oh well. The E6600 is the value choice, evidently.

And given the reduction in FSB, I wonder whether Yonah's FSB wall is making a return again, and the ones that can work at FSB1333 are shipped as Xeons? This could be a major dent in any OCer's plans.
