I already can buy AMDs with these prices:
ADA3800CNBOX Socket 940 / AM2 for 136.00 Euro
ADA3500CNBOX Socket 940 / AM2 for 107.00 Euro
ADA3200CNBOX Socket 940 / AM2 for 98.00 Euro ,
same price is also for Socket 939 parts.

Anybody wants some...

With price cuts like that they either had a pretty damn decent profit margin already per unit or they are going to take a big hit and hope the increased sales and therefore decrease in potential Intel buyers will benefit them in the longer term.
Either way its gonna hit their bottom line hard and looks like a "Hail Mary" pass to me.I smell fear....

If the AM2 Athlon 3800+ is cut to $139USD, that should be around $185AUD (Australian dollars), but all the Australian sites I keep going to are selling it for $435AUD +........I'm assuming the cut hasn't taken effect here...yet...

Competition is definitely good for all of us. Who in their right mind would want just one company to dominate?

The only thing that would make me less horny for Conroe would be a %50 cut in s939 X2 prices. Otherwise my next upgrade will still be Core 2 Duo. If AMD came out tomorrow and said that I could pickup an s939 X2 for roughly the same price as a dual core D then I would definatly snatch up one now and wait a while to see how Conroe matures.

IMO, AMD should have introduced these cuts with the introduction of AM2. It seems wierd to price a chip, release it, and then cut prices two weeks later. Maybe they overestimated demand? Or maybe as Uber says, some higher clocked chips are on the way. That would surprise me though since it would also have made sense to release higher clocked chips at the same time as AM2.

this just shows you how much profit they make if they can reduce price by 50%, i heard one cpu cost them no more then $5 to make

but back in like 2003 when there was no 754, amd had the best the prices, their best proccessor the anthlon xp3200 socket A was like £150/$250. this cpu was equivilant to a FX 62 of today which cost £700/$1200. Amd have increased their price for the highend cpu, i know the fx 62 is faster but thats not the point. they should of kept their high end price and every time they release a new high end cpu it should cost about the same high end price as the previous cpu and not increse it, basicaly the fx 62 should cost about the same as the xp3200 did when it came out, £150 / $250 for fx 62. thank god GPU prices has stayed the same, my 9800xt cost me £300 in 2003 and so did my X1900XT for £300 last month

the other cpu's like antlon xp2800 which was £90 / $200 which was like mid end cpu in those days should also be the same price for mid end cpu's today in which they are not. The LOW end cpu of today (AM2 3000+ or 939 3000+) cost more than the MID end cpu of 2003

Is it me, or is "twice as low as" bad grammar, and easily replaced by saying "up to half off of"?

These cuts may very well be in anticipation of some new chips clocked a little higher. These wouldl take over at the current high-end price points and the others fall down the ladder. That's traditionally what Intel does, and what AMD has done in the past (we've kind of forgotten because it's been so long since they did it). It's a little different this time around because it's unclear how much headroom AMD has (how much more speed can they squeeze out of their top-binned chips?) and because Intel is making wholesale cuts across their entire line to clear out inventory -- Conroe isn't just coming in at the high end, it's coming in up and down the line.

Still, it's pretty damn amazing how much processing power you can now get for, say, $100.

If I were AMD, I'd hold off cutting prices on X2 until I saw what the availability of Core 2 parts is. If Core 2 isn't available at retail, then I would only cut the X2 for OEMs and leave retail prices where they're at (or make only small cuts).

Hector Ruiz has shown very little interest in unnecessary price cuts -- I suspect he will hold the line as long as possible.

I'm hoping I can get a cheap 939 3800+ or opteron 165 used :D the more price cuts in the high end help lower prices of used stuff.

About time too, seeing how buyers have started postponing purchases in wait of Conroe some time ago. AMD needs substantial cuts in the X2 line pricing before the release of Core2, in order to reestablish interest in their line of processors and have a fighting chance.

After all, how long has the X2 3800 been hovering around the 300 dollar mark? 10 months? More? Thankfully it seems like we are going to have some competition in the CPU sector, at long last.
