It would be kind of neat if in another 5 years or so Steve Jobs were to retire to start his own charity and compete with Bill Gates' charity to see who could come up with the best solutions to world problems. It would be pretty cool if one of the most competitive rivalries in business became a competitive rivalry in doing good charity work.

That Charity of his will likely change the world a few times, and outlive me a few times over to boot.

How much actual work was Gates doing for MS besides being its spokesperson? I think its better for him to leave running the company to other people and focus on more notable tasks like helping people in need.

hmm..

Say what you will about the guy and his crappy software (which has made all this possible, and don't think for a minute that we'd all be reading tech report on macs if Windows never existed), but I think it's pretty stand-up of him to run a charity and do his part to make the world a better place, when there's a lot of other multi-millionares who just sit on thier cash and let it go to waste (the stock-holders of Exxon-Mobil, anyone?)

Bill Gates is a smart guy who has pleasingly altruistic goals.

Microsoft is a lousy company that is costing on inertia.

The two have little to do with each other, but less now than yesterday.

Well... actually, the greatest benefit can probably be found by focusing on issues in developing countries, where fairly inexpensive interventions can go a long, long way. For example, providing electricity and plumbing to a school without electricity and plumbing has a pretty big impact, whereas trying to figure out which relatively minor, yet expensive, tweak to how math is taught to kids who would rather play with their PSPs is relatively hard.

Oh man, sad day when this dude goes back home....

All hail Bill Gates....ppl.

I think this is the final lasting character on this ERA of personnal computing.

Hope Vista doesn't become a ME 2007 since I need to upgrade next year from Win2K

Mundie and Ozzie sound like a comedy team.

To Gates' credit, it sounds like he's focusing his formidable energies and skills where they could really have some benefit. Kudos to him.

It looks like Vista is going to tank it or it is going to be the next ME!
