do they finally have the option to turn off clear type? i used IE7 for about an hour and thought i was going blind. i did a little research and found that it uses clear type in the browser. i know you can turn off clear type for windows but that has no affect on IE7. i freakin hate clear type.

Me and everybody else could give a rat's ass about any feature in IE7 until we see a line-item that says "Full compliance and dedication to W3C CSS standards" and a java XML object that is compatible with Mozilla's (even if IE has always had a better XML implementation).
If I have to write box model hacks or alternate scripts for IE7 I'm just going to show PNG screenshots of my web-sites on IE browsers rather than forcing me to butcher my beautiful code. I have watched IE's decrepit pseudo-standards pervert and cripple true standards for far too long. Microsoft: It's time to bend over and tell YOUR engineers to RTFM for a change. Get over the need to be first to market. Stop jumping the gun with hacky implementations of pre-ratified standards that serve only to confuse and befuddle web developers. Stop stifling my cross-platform pixel-perfect accuracy by forcing me to duplicate huge swaths of my code and at worst, abandon perfectly adequate implementations for a half-assed mesh of old and new. |

Geez, I hope it's better than beta2, which managed to cause problems on my two homebuilt systems. For FS 2004 fans, I found that IE7 beta 2 caused CTD and that at least one other person reported the same. Upon its removal all problems resolved. IE7 beta 2 simply wouldn't work on my other system. I guess that's why they call it a beta.

As for ClearType:
- Yes, IE7 renders in ClearType by default. - They did this because research shows improved reading accuracy and speed. - Yes, it is a retarded choice to do it that way. - They could just ASK during IE7 Setup whether to turn it on system-wide or not. - #2, If you don't like it, you can easily turn it off in IE7. Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Multimedia, uncheck "Always use ClearType for HTML". Phew. Tough one. Been there since Beta 1, by the way. - #15, you are right. ClearType has to make assumptions about the grid order of the RGB components of the pixels on your screen. Non-standard grid ordering will make ClearType at its default settings look like arse. If you have an LCD, and ClearType looks bad, go here and tweak it: http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx |

Awesome, they finally added all the features that were available in other browsers three years ago.

I wonder if the release version of Internet Explorer 7 will work on systems running Windows 98 and whatnot...
