Can't say I like it. The PC industry only had 4 major players (Intel/AMD and Nvidia/ATI). What happens if Intel/Nvidia decide to merge? (possible, considering the amount of $$$ Intel has). Sure, ATI is still gonna be kept seperate, but in 3 years time, is AMD gonna let it's "ATI motherboard" division make Intel mb's?

Another note is that if that ATI uses AMD's more advanced process technologies, Nvidia will be compelled to make a deal with Intel where Intel will cheaply manufacture GPUs on the latest process technologies for Nvidia and Nvidia's SLI will be unlocked on Intel motherboards.

Intel says "no more special deals on procs!"
Dell says "fine! we're shipping AMD systems!" ...AMD takes out 2.5B loan... AMD offers complete platform solution. |

Now that ATMDi is a "platform", this could give OEMs the a real choice on what to buy. Heck, Apple's movement to x86 was heavily based on a complete platform from Intel.
Seeing Apple go to AMD isn't going to happen (if ever), but this is now a real "choice" for builders. |

why they didn't grab VIA and/or SiS, or someone else beyond ATI ?
Much better would have been AMD-Nv-ULI.... From now on...I'll just have the option of a Nvidia Sli system with whatever CPU or an AMD-ATI system...yuck. |

Interesting comments--I'll be sure and keep tabs to see what other insights you might gather.
With respect to the cross-fire license for nVidia core-logic, I wonder if the issue isn't so much of ATi disallowing a cf license to nV, as much as it might be nV wanting to keep cf out of its chipsets. I hadn't thought about the Core bus license owned by ATi. I really can't see why AMD would want a Core/2 license from Intel anymore than it wanted a P4 bus license from Intel (AMD didn't, and Intel wouldn't, IIRC.) Interesting point, though, to see play out. If Intel is true to form, however, I don't think it will want AMD to have such a license--and I can't see why AMD would want it. But maybe ATi would, so this should be interesting. |

The only thing I'm worried here is that they'll waste a vast amount of ressources (time, money, etc.) to seal up this M&A; basically the first bullet in the assorted notes.
They better synch fast and smoothly, or they'll be trending rough waters, with Intel waking up from its coma with a bang and NVidia currently having the upper hand. |

it's good to see ATI will likely remain in Canada. Such a move will likely bolster its reputation as a decent, "larger" Canadian employer I'm sure.

Why ATI and not Nvidia? Nvidia's mature chipset and historical AMD preferences seemed more natural a fit.
"AMD execs expect significant cost savings in certain areas of operational overlap between the two companies—$75 million by the end of 2007 and $125 million by 2008" Chump change in regards to the total amount yearly spent by these two companies. |
