Why are they not building chipsets for Intel? license? I thought AMD stated ATi would be, 'full sail ahead.'

Crap! I was planning on getting a core 2 duo for my new system. I wanted core 2 with ATI RD600 motherboard [with 3 x16 lanes]. I loved ATI idea of physics so when DX 10 comes out i could use my DX 9 card for physics. Now I dont know what to do anymore.

Guys, I need help to avoid making mistakes with my new build. In my last upgrade about a year+ ago I went with AMD socket 754 and AGP, now I'm stuck with no upgrade path. I intend to build a new system in latest 2 weeks. Can anyone enlighten me on AMD's 4X4? Is is socket AM2 or K8L? Can i get AMD 5000+ now and add another later [ie 4X4]? Also I intend to go the path of ATI chipset because of their future Physics idea. Originally I wanted to go with core 2 duo but with all these rumors about ATI's intel platform dying, I'm now confused. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

On a positive note, no one should be buying ECS kit anyway. It's great as a free bundled item from Newegg though.

The whole chipset market is just a mess right now. If AMD would've had the foresight to purchase ULI, things would be much better for all of the parties involved.

I hope AMD/ATI isn't surprised by this. This was one one of the key reasons why I thought the ATI acquisition was a bad idea.

Edit: just read the earlier post that explains how AMD/ATI is planning to phase out Intel chipsets... As could be expected, this was part of AMD's calculations when evaluating the acquisition, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out :)

And so the decline of ATI's fortunes begins... :(

Seems ATI just can't catch a break when it comes to motherboards and chipsets.

Although I more than likely missed reading it somewhere, I didn't think ATI was going to have that much problem supplying chipsets. After all, they don't use ULI anymore, and they have their new SB ready. Something I'm missing here with manufacturing problems or something?

I would have liked to see the effects of an XPress 3200 with one of intel's ICHR8 or ICHR9's and a Core2 Duo

Support for intel processors by ATI is going to fall pretty hard, I wouldn't imagine anyone wanting to get one.
