Excellent review, I know the cutting edge people love it when a new ATI/Nvidia +50 card shows up for the high end but it's nice to see they are really starting to pay attention to the mid range. $200 for almost $300 worth of performance is a good change.

One thing I noticed though, the second graph there has the 7900gt sli setup highlighted instead of the GS.

Was looking around at Newegg. The Leadtech model seems to have the nicest fan:

Nice article.
Looks like my 7800GT is still pretty good, although maybe not worth $200 like is was last month.

Since no 7800GT or GTX cards where include, here are my latest 3Dmark 2006 score screen shots, just for the heck of it.
Dual Opteron 250s @2.4Ghz, 4GB PC3200, Single & SLI 7800GT.
I appear to be limited by my CPU speed.

On another note, once again, I gotta ask:
How come no VIVO on these new cards?

I asked the same question when the 7900GT came out.

It looks like after the 7800GT came out, VIVO has been taken out in newer cards, but Dual Dual-Link DVI ports have been added.

Does one have anything to do with the other, or is the VIVO just not a feature consumers want or use?

I use mine every now and then, and think it is a cool feature.
You also get editing software as well.

7800GT IN THE BOX

BFG GeForce 7800GT; 256MB graphics card, Quick install manual, DVI-I to VGA dongle, HDTV dongle, VIVO dongle, Dual 4-pin to single 6-pin power cable, Video editing software.

7900GS IN THE BOX

Aside from the price break there doesn't seem to be much difference between the 7900 GS and the GT. No passive cooling. Requires the PCIe power connector. Slight drop in framerate.

I almost feel good about my passively cooled 7600 GT purchase. I was thinking of waiting for the 7900 GS reviews.

Maybe the DX10 cards will be faster with an even lower power consumption. I doubt it, but I will dream no matter what.

The 7900 GTs didn't have fan speed control? Since when?

My eVGA 7900 GT has it.

Personally I'm glad you included the 7600GT. Glad to see the standard stands.

I wonder if the GS is more robust than the GT. The forums are rife with complaints about dead and buggy cards even after multiple RMAs.

How's this for timing? Tonight my mate asks me to help finalise his build. This turns up, so I tell him to drop the X2 down to a 512K version and spend the saved £30 + an extra £10 on a 7900 GS. Versus a 7600GT. He will be a happy bunny.

Excellent review as always.

Nice review, as usual. I would've liked to have seen a 7800GT in the mix there, as that's pretty much all this card is with a higher core/mem clock.

How about the 1900 XT? Only about $40 more and beats the 7900 GS in most of these benchmarks...

I don't think I'd choose aquamarine for my carpet and light green for my wallpaper, but to each his own, I suppose.

True. I prefer that the carpet match the drapes as well.

This review makes me very happy about the 7900GS that I picked up from woot.com a little bit ago - I got it for only $145.

I'd still like to see the X1800XT get an honorary mention. It's bigger, louder, hotter, and Xfire ain't SLI, but it's sitting at $200 as well.
