I hate the RIAA's tactics as much as the next person (except Vrock), but as posted in an Ars Technica discussion:

the RIAA is actually asking for the minimum statutory damages allowed under 17 USC 504 - "in a sum of not less than $750 or more than $30,000 as the court considers just"

You can argue all you like about how fair/unfair it is, but they're asking for the minimum.

You've committed a crime and are being sued for it. You're supposed to pay ludicrous amounts of money.

If the only consequence of downloading unlicensed content is to pay less than you would have if you'd obtained it legally, aren't more people going to throw itunes out the window and return to P2P?

Why is it when big business gets ripped off they can sue for money from the simpletons yet when we get ripped off they get fined and pay the government or state instead of us?

I really wouldn't care if they fined copyright violators millions. Or shot them.

Using that logic, I guess when gas stations rip consumers off with faulty meters, when (or if) they get caught, they should only have to repay what they gained by their theft?

"Copyright owners often use street-value estimates to calculate losses, but this assumes that every person who bought pirated goods would otherwise have paid for a legitimate item, the report notes."

This is akin to suiing someone for a $750 for stealing a pack of gum. The punishment doesn't fit the crime.
