These are just PATA drives with SATA bridges. I expect the price difference will be similar to the 16x PATA vs SATA drives although it might be higher initially because of Newegg's on-demand pricing other shops will carry it as well. So call it <$40. The only catch is supply, the 16x SATA goes in and out of stock and I'm sure the 20x will have higher demand.

Haven't tried their SATA variants yet, but the new LiteOns are very, very impressive indeed. It's made me forgive them them for their first few terrible (LDW series) to lacklustre (SOHW series) efforts in the DVD±R market.

16X vs 20X means in reality 20 seconds savings?

I smell a lawsuit when the first DVD explodes due to the high speed. :)

Funny this announcement should come now because my Lite-On DVD burner just failed on me today after only a couple of months. Otherwise my experience with them has been good.

Where are all of the SATA drives that were supposed to be popping up? I only see two, both manufactured by lite-on at Newegg

Yawn! 25% faster 40% more expensive. Not worth it. Especially since I rarely use my burner anymore.

:o) For reference in the UK pricing is £20 for Pioneer 16x, £20 NEC 18x, £22 NEC 18x with LabelFlash and £35 LiteOn 16x USB2 External. I would expect a £32 RRP to translate to £30 or less at online stores.

And the vast Litey modding community will soon have modified firmwares and other proggys such as SmartBurn tweaked so that burn speed ratings may be readily bypassed.

This rich 3rd party community is what's kept me running Liteys since my first build. They aren't the quietest of drives, but their sheer hackability (often with more-than-tacit support from Lite-On firmware engineers) makes them unbeatable IMO.

Finally, moving optical drives to SATA at prices far below the Plextor luxury tax will make case cooling so much easier.
