I bet people who bought a 8800 in November are kicking themselves for not waiting 4 months for this announcement.

Geez. You'd think professional writers and editors would see this crap.
While at an AMD press conference, David Berlind captured some photographs of what apparently is a prototype of a discreet graphics card with ATI's R600 technology on it. DISCRETE. That behemoth is anything but discreet. Yeah I ought to post it on ZDNet, but I'm not signing up for an account just for that. Anonymous comments ftw. |

AMD touts the achievement as an important milestone towards its "Accelerated Computing" vision of having specialized co-processors speed up conventional systems. T
Tout your achievements to me when I can actually purchase the card. I no longer believe in achievements of cards I either cannot buy, or ones that are promised in the future for cards already released. If you don't have a card I can actually purchase, any achievements made are worthless to me, the consumer. |

Rave: Houses won't need fireplaces anymore.
Rant: Card will need to be underground in summer, and outside in Winter. |

My Favorite part of the linked article... the "cautionary statement" is almost as long as the entire article. Heres a tidbit:
This press release contains forward-looking statements including, but not limited to, the performance, capabilities, and compatibility of the AMD Opteron™ microprocessor and AMD R600 Stream Processor and Graphics Processor, including statements relating to multimedia capabilities, strong system performance, stability, graphics image quality and enhanced consumer experiences, which are made pursuant to the safe harbor provisions of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Investors are cautioned that forward-looking statements involve risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from the company's current expectations... |

Well all I can say is that I sure hope my next video card is no longer than 9" in length. I might be forced to stick with the upper mid-range on my next card.

Hey check out the third picture. Looks to me like the card isn't really so long but they cantilevered the fan off the end. The PCB is probably the same size as whatever retail card they're going to launch.

Check out the third or fourth picture in the series posted. It shows the card next to a keyboard. Geez, that puppy is long.

The retail is shorter. of course. the only reason the OEM is a foot long is so AMD could put a quiet cooler on it.(hm kinda puts the "quiet PC" crowd ina bit of a bind eh?)
