HDMI connector is lecrap. Whatever is better than that, even SCART stays plugged in more reliably. No way I'm going to buy a pc display with just hdmi.

Great. You need a dual-link special connector for a measly 30 inch LCD, and they release a new specification that only barely exceeds dual-link DVI?
I'm no expert on display connectors, but if we've seen an explosion from 17" LCDs being the "high end" to 30" monsters, and given the size of plasmas, LCDs, and technology, will a "slight" improvement over dual-link DVI be able to handle, say, a sixty-inch 5180x3200 display or a ninety-inch 7770x4800 display? Each of those will demand a factor-of-four expansion in display throughput. This seems like they crapped it out over the weekend. |

DisplayPort supports HDCP; it doesn't require encryption.
Like it or not, HDMI is designed for consumer electronics, not for use in personal computers and their peripherals. The entire standard was created around this intention, including the royalty arrangement. This is part of the reason for the almost total dearth of HDMI support on consumer video cards. We need an open PC standard for high-bandwidth digital displays, and this one, by supporting pass-through of HDMI and other standards, is the logical choice. Dual DVI, while serviceable, is a bit of a kludge and requires too much real estate on the video card. With the growing demand for high-definition display, DVI is showing it's age, despite its relative youth. I truly do hope that this will become the standard that replaces DVI for good, as it is intended to do. |

yaaay! we get to spend more money to have DRM forced on us! wohoo!!
you know, i think i'll just stick to pirating until they get it. it's faster, cheaper, easier, higher quality, and more flexible. you know why people don't buy illegal drugs? it's not just because it's illegal. the legal ones (e.g. caffeine, alcohol, tobacco) are generally cheaper, higher (or more consistent) quality, and more convenient to purchase and use. if they keep making the legal option worse and worse, then geez, i wonder where the business is going to go... |

Eh, I can't help but feel that DisplayPort is a solution in search of a problem. The electronics industry has adopted HDMI, whether we like it or not. Instead of having several different display interfaces as we do today, why not just standardize on one of them? HDMI should be that one.
Anyway, we've been hearing about DisplayPort for eons now. And it's still not here. |

UDI and Displayport are both going to stump, because the lack of any significant improvement in increasing the dot pitch of monitors. The other way to support higher resolutions is get larger displays. 30"+ displays are already pushing it in terms of desktop space. The greater amount of bandwidth that these standards will provide will just go to waste.
Dual-link DVI and HDMI already provide more then enough bandwidth for needs of current single-monitor displays. The real reason for these standards? Forcing customers to buy new mointors, video cards while MPAA can lock down their visual content. HDMI will end-up winning, because it already has a presence in the marketplace and the backing of several A/V guys. |

A new standard to push new hardware. I swear that's what half the 'standards' that come out are really about, especially one like this that doesn't make a real difference to the end-user. Oh ya, it makes a difference to companies who won't have to pay a royalty but I doubt we'll see that reflected in product pricing.
Look to see this become the new 'standard' in 1-2 once enough people have bought into HDMI devices. |

I'm sticking with my DVI connection until at least of the end of decade, thanks. I didn't fork over $500 CDN for a 22" widescreen display five months ago for nothin'.

I think its a great idea,we need standardization of these kind of connectors.
Its more efficient and is way better than having various connectors for DVI, VGA etc......Goood one. |

If DisplayPort mandates HDCP then it is not "open and free to use". Also why exactly do we need another video connector?
