Why all the hatred toward microsoft? Microsoff did not BUY itself into monopoly. M$ labored for it. The idea of google BUYING itself into a monopoly is a lot different. It's not m$ fault that people have little choice when it comes to OS - take a look at the ugly Apple commercial. there are other options to M$ product. Name anything M$ that hasn't been bashed by the media and everyone. But the funny thing is, after all the bashing these same people still go out there and buy the products.

Wait, so Google bought DoubleClick and Microsoft is complaining about monopoly issues... Microsoft is a monopoly in its own right, how would it really be different if it won the bid?

Sour Grapes. Microsoft winces as the tables turn.
Or as the French would say "Hoist on one's own petard"

There is no lock in on advertising. All someone has to do is offer a advertisers a better cut and they are in. Or come with a new service. You can change advertisers monthly on the web. It is a pretty meaningless and weak monopoly. Even with doubleclick google wouldn't have nearly the advertising share that microsoft has of the OS market and that monopoly is actually a lock in and lock out for competitors, that Microsoft wields like sword.

Google comment:
“We understand that we will go through a regulatory process in the United States and Europe now,” Mr. Schmidt said. “Along the way, all these questions will be discussed and debated. And we welcome that.”

Quite reasonable compared to chair throwing Balmer, who wants MS to have the monopoly of everything.

Did Microsoft complain with a straight face?

I would imagine they had to at least giggle a little bit.
