How much more lightpiping, etc.? Cathode-lit LCDs already have a pretty hefty chunk of optical-grade acrylic and several sheets of reflector material, fresnel diffuser, etc. sandwiched together. Seems like you could simply replace the two cathodes with two LED bar elements, and be 90% there.

Page me when LCD's are even half as good as a CRT for black levels, refresh rate and fixed pixel width's not looking like crap!
