At least AMD has had some different names. Athlon was always the flagship but they had the Duron and Sempron, and Turion. How long have Pentium and Celeron been around? And how creative is "Core"?

Phenom is stupid-sounding though. Like they only gave it half a name, and it's a slang word. It sounds trendy rather than powerful. I prefer the "hinting" type names that aren't real words but have parts of words to just give you a hint that it's like those.

Somewhere, there are some execs and designers being tortured in a deep dungeon for saddling AMD with the Quad FX name and design which they now have to ride and pretend to be enthusiastic about for a few years before they can dump it.

I wonder what LG Electronics will say about that, considering that I doubt that the "Phenom" trade name has yet to expire...

Man they finally make an inhouse chipset and it has a retarded txt-name with numbers that are pronounced as letters. I guess those marketing guys need to do something to put food on the table but at this rate it's not a very good something.

I guess when you get right down to it, the core issue is that AMD has never been particularly good at selling themselves as a consumer brand. They're a semiconductor company that happens to make chips which are used in a lot of consumer products... but unlike Intel, they haven't really been able to make the transition from marketing themselves to engineers and OEMs, to marketing themselves to end users.

The period where they had a clear performance edge over Intel was a missed opportunity, IMO. They should've come up with an equivalent to the classic "Intel Inside" branding campaign while they had the upper hand...
