People are lukewarm about DX10 in cards from the Big Guys. S3's announcement is about as hot as me announcing that my next graphics chip will designed for DX10.

Doesn't the article state that the chip that will be manufactured on 65nm and be DirectX 10.1-compatible is the 430, not the 460?

I had a good experience with my S3 Trio 64 back in 1996 while running DOS and Windows 95 (original release!) but since then haven't given them any serious look. I guess I also had a ViRGE DX as well for a short while afterwards but not for long.
Still, I welcome any new graphics players in the market since it does lead to more competition in the marketplace. I doubt S3 will hardly make a dent but something is better than nothing. |

You'd have thought S3 would have gotten tired of flooding the market with cheap, buggy, slow graphics chips by now. How the hell do they make any money, I wonder?

I'm not sure I understand the point of such low-end DX10 parts. It's not needed for Vista. It probably won't play games worth a damn. For those looking at the least expensive setup that is good enough for desktop work integrated makes more sense.

Actually, I think S3's *been* using Fujitsu for their foundry since 2005. See http://www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20051102-2.html.
So the only new info here is that they're confirmed to be working on a DX10 part. As for how good it will be, I'm actually using one of their current Chrome S25 cards. Is it decent? Yes. Is it great? No. But that still makes it a whole helluva lot better than anything they've done in the past. Yeah, I know, damning with faint praise, but unlike any past S3 cards I've used, this one actually works. |

Yeah?
And? So? What? They don't have a shot in hell, unless they're going to undercut the bigboys by a pretty big number. |

If they wanted a market immediately, they'd simply give the Open Source world what its wanted for ages: a totally open 3D accelerator.
It doesn't have to be a very good accelerator, mind you. I it just has to work, and they have to provide full docs. Some starter GPL'd (or better, BSD licensed) drivers would be nice, but optional.
If they do this, they'll ship millions of units. They're probably shipping many CPUs because of the fact that their on-CPU crypto stuff is supported by Linux and the BSDs; on the other hand, they never really got their on-chipset video decoders supported on those OS's.
