It's about time. There's a massive gap in the middle of the price range for the DirectX 10 generation. I'm still looking for a good $200 card, though.

So, does it still need a nuclear reactor to power it?

The more I think about it, the more a non-starter this thing is to me. I was hoping AMD or nVidia would release a TRUE mid-range card (better than x1950Pro in DX9 and acceptable performance in DX10) with a TRUE mid-range price ($150) but it seems this isn't to be. The 8600GTS kinda-sorta fills that DX9 bill but falls short in DX10.

I'm like a lot of people. I balance the cost of my card against the cost of my system. My system is mid-level (Gigabyte P31 mobo, Pentium E2180 overclocked, 2GB DDR-667, 120GB HD) and cost about 280 to build, so there is no way I'm going to stick a video card in it that costs as much as the system itself. Give me decent performance in the $150 range (like an x1950Pro does now for DX9) and I'll buy it without blinking.

Doesn't NVidia have a chip coming out soon, rumored to compete in this market space? Purportedly, with similar memory specs?

I'd like to know why it took them this long to bring out their SKU for the bum R600 chips. This could be another Radeon 9500-style release that will last just long enough for a new midrange chip and high end refresh to arrive. Quick, clear out all those slow, buggy, and hot R600 chips while they still can.

I was wondering if the Pro and/or GTwill still have the same 6 and 8 pin power requirements.

With those specs, why would anyone buy the XT over the 1gb Pro?
