Aarrgh, what was Amazon thinking?! To listen to music samples you have have to RealPlayer installed. Over my dead body! I get stuff from Amazon semi-regularly and always have liked them. But I will not install RealPlayer. Maybe they've cleaned up their act in the past few years, I don't know. But I've avoided them for a long time

I don't have realplayer and the preview worked for me so I don't think that's an issue. I've already bought some stuff from them, just to test it out. I liked it; it automatically puts it in WMP which is handy, the bitrate is high so I'm not too worried about quality and it is cheap. I'm happy.

why anyone would pay for music in mp3 format is beyond me.
I guess I might in one situation... if it was absolutely not available on CD & it was something I had been searching for. (old music is sometimes hard to find) With that said.. I am a Yahoo music service subscriber. Its nice to be able to listen to all that music with only a small monthly fee. But when I find something I really like, I buy it on CD .. never through the service. |

As stated in my reply to odizzido, this system check for US only residents is error proof.
In order to make any purchase, you must scan your government issued tattoo-barcode ID on your arm. This sends a "location fix" check to the goverment system for a location fix. The government system does location fix on your body using GPS tracker embeded in your leg. The coordinates are then sent to Amazon who matches these up to the Google Earth map. Their proprietary software, then, draws a little "dot" on the Google Earth map with your exact location. Finally, an illegal alien checks to make sure your dot drawn on the google earth map is within the US borders. |

Woohoo, another step to ending music DRM. It is funny to see those (Universal) in the "giving up DRM is crazy" camp, cave to reality a month later.

Sounds like a good deal.
I can imagine that Universal thinks they're hurting Apple, but Apple will keep on selling iPods, so really everyone wins from this. |
