Thank you Intel.

Just sold after holding their stock for 12 months. 55% return.

It will be a very merry holiday season this year.

when AMD was on top, what did it get us? the same old for 2+ years.

With intel on top, we've got cheaper processors and major increases in performance.

Granted, AMD needs to stay in the game. But they also need intel to give em a good slap in the face once in a while (as intel needed from AMD with netburst).

when a company post $2B profit and still has to layoff 20% of their work force, there is something wrong

I'm glad in some respects that their doing so well. But for AMD's sake I do sorta hope Intel raises their CPU prices across the board. Otherwise I fear AMD might go under...

These numbers will be all the more interesting when AMD reports tomorrow. Is the dramatic increase in revenues due to general growth in the PC industry? Or has Intel recaptured lost market share from AMD? Maybe a combination of both. Either way, whatever AMD reports will be viewed as good news for Intel. AMD on the other hand can't afford to have a miserable quarter. If the best possible conditions in the market exist where demand and unit shipments are skyrocketing but AMD is still unable to turn a profit then things are truly bad in Sunnyvale.

Another brilliant exmple for why competition is a good - and lack thereof a bad - thing. While their CURRENT market share deservedly reflects the quality of their products, high margins still mean they are charging their customers prices that are greatly higher than their own costs.
This should make people think twice before they buy top of the line chips - you just don't get a fair value for your money.

Holy crap! 57% gross margin? That seems almost unbelievable. Or am I confusing GM and GPM? IANACFO

It'd be interesting to see their CPU business itemized.

Edit: looks like CPU unit sales were up quite a bit, but average sale price was flat. So in the CPU business they're getting some good economies of scale perhaps. Yields could also be improving and they're getting more good CPUs from the same expenditure.

And this is news why?

They do own over %80 of the market.

Should this be marked as obvious?
